| Will Not Pee/Poo Outside Hello Everyone, First Post here on YorkieTalk, Just bought a Yorkie yesterday, 11 weeks, Male, AKC and all, Named Yogi. Very Playful and amazing. Working on his potty training, but only concern is that each time I go outside with him, I will be outside for about 15-30 minutes the most and he will not pee/poo. Ive used the spray they recommended so that he will eliminate in that spot but nothing. Once I bring him inside he goes on my Welcome Mat or Carpet but I do have a wee pad setup and try to run him over but never make it. He just wont eliminate outside at all and waits till We get inside. What can I do for this, Sorry if its a repost. Thanks |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | This may sound gross but it works. Next time you take him out, take a peice of doggy poo with you and place it on the ground where you want him to go. He will smell his own scent and will go. You can do the same inside the house if he tends to miss the pads. Let me know if it works.

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Yogi is probably accustomed to going indoors on a pad at the breeder's home and may not know that it is okay to potty outside. That was my experience with Max. Although I intended to continue using piddle pads, I also wanted him to go potty outdoors. It took a couple of months before he figured it out. He would hold it until we returned home from walks and outings. One day, he couldn't hold it any longer and he peed. I praised him profusely and he saw my reaction and started peeing every time we went out. The same thing happened with pooping. He finally couldn't hold it and pooped. When he saw that I was overjoyed, he wanted to poop outside every day. You won't have to wait 2 months, but you may have to spend a long time outdoors with Yogi. Take him outside the minute he wakes up from sleeping/naps, after meals, after playtime/excitement, and many times in between. Stay outdoors until he goes. Use keywords and phrases to tell him to potty. When he does it outdoors, show him you are really excited and give him a little treat. He will figure it out soon.

| I re-read your post and see you are using pads indoors too. Limit his roaming space while potty training. Have that pad really close. Make sure he doesn't have to travel across the house to get to it. Supervise him very closely, and when you can't watch him, confine him to an xpen or a small gated off room with his pad. Once again, praise him profusely when he successfully hits the pad and give him a little treat. Really go nuts and throw a party!

| thanks Thank you all for the replies. Woke up this morning to take him out and after about 15 minutes he peed and I praised him very much. But i knew he had to go poo so I waited about 10 more minutes and nothing. Took him inside and gave him limited space with the pad and he poo on the pad and praised him as well. Will try to give him more time outside and keep praising him. Thanks for the help and will keep everyone posted. |

| if he seems to know to use the pad, perhaps you could bring that outside. Also if you are training him to go outside, you might want to try using bells. I have a ribbon on my door with several jingle bells at the bottom, each time I would take Lola outside to potty I would hold her paw to the bell and ring it several times and say Lola go potty, it took over a month but she started ringing it herself. Now at a year she rings it everytime, and sometimes with a vengence if she thinks I can not hear her. when traveling I bring the bells and she rings them where ever we are. A few days ago I knew she had to go bad and as she headed towards the door, I realized the ribbon had got caught so the bells were stuck on the outside where she could not see them.I had to laugh because she turned and looked at me with such panic in her eyes, you could just see her thinking, Oh chit, where are those bells, Moooooooooom what should I do, much to her relief I opened the door to let her out. If you do decide to use the bell, there will be times that you dog will ring it just to go outside to play, I can usually tell when that happens so I either ignore it or put her out and give her only a min to pee or poop, then bring her right back in. good luck, yorkies and other small dogs (for the most part) are way more challenging to house break than larger dogs |

| Does training to use the pee pads and outdoors confuse a puppy? I want to train to use outdoors. |

| Crate training helps. Remember Yorkies have tiny bladders. Moving a pee pad outdoors aids in the transition. Regular schedule is the most important thing do it all like clock work now and you'll set the stage for the next 15-20 years.

| Hi, First post on here. What a brilliant idea with the bells to ring when your Yorkie wants to go outside for a pee or a poo! Has anyone else tried this or similar.? My Yorkie Roxy is ten months and poos outside if the door is open but won't ask to go out if door is closed.Posting from Nottingham Uk. |

My furkids Donating Member | I'm having the same issue right now....I live in mass and it is cold and wet outside. My girls are 5 and 7 yrs old...Bentley is our new little guy..just turned 6 months...only had him for a month. the girls WERE doing very good going on the pads...all of a sudden (and not just when we got Bentley) they started going where ever they want! If I tell Lillie (5yrold) to go pee or poop on the pad she will go....Sadie...not so much and Bentley!! FOR GET IT! he is a wild man! LOL...i will keep putting him on the pad and he refuses to go....SOMETIMES he will use the pad...most of the time not! It's very frustrating...I want them to go outside but as I said it is very cold up here right now.....I don't believe you can't teach an old dog new tricks...so when the weather starts getting warmer I will be teaching them to ring the bell and go outside....I'm at my wits end right now with this potty training thing! But, will deal with it because I love my furkids.

| Dickie had used nothing but a pee pad his first 5 weeks with us. we kept him sheltered until he had all his shots. after his last set, we took a trip to San Antonio to meet his grandma and her two dogs. wanted to get him socialized. his longest car ride had been 30 minutes to vet, so we worried about an 8 hour ride. he picked up pee pads within a week, so we figured he would get the grass pretty quick too. not so. we stopped every 30 minutes for the first 5 hours to no avail. he had fun, but he would not pee or poop. frustrating because we knew he had to go. he did not go the entire trip. must have hurt.... after 5 minutes in the back yard at grandmas house, after seeing the other dogs pee, he let loose. on the way home, he peed everytime we stopped. I was worried he might not use the pads when we got home, but as soon as we walked in, he ran straight to the pad and peed. since he has had all his shots we have started walking a couple times per day, and he has no probably going outside. if he is I.side, he uses the pad, when we walk, he uses the grass. not sure how to duplicate this, but watching the other digs outside definetly made a big difference. |

| I also had trouble with my puppy when he was 11-13 weeks with going outside in safe yards before he finished his vaccines. He just would not go. Then I took him to my aunts backyard and she has german shepards. After he watched the big dogs go he mimicked them and now he goes outside on walks. He sometimes still has accidents but at 18 weeks now he is pretty good at going on the pads inside or in a backyard or walk. He still has mistakes 1 out of 9 times or in a new house when visiting. U really have to watch them like a hawk for the first 4 months. And reward them when they go on their pads every time. Put them on leash even indoors so they don't run into the corner and potty when you aren't looking. Reward and praise on pads or outside. Always reward! |

| Roxy Hi, Really helpful to read about how other Yorkies behave re house training.I had a boy Yorkie for 16 years and he picked up house training really quickly. So I was bemused when Roxy-now 10 months-just didn't seem to get it.As I posted earlier she does now if I leave the back door open but will not ask.I cannot leave pads down as my partner has a boy beagle 8 months and he just picks them up and runs around the house with them fortunately I do have wooden flooring....so mopping up is not too bad.Would be nice to have a pee and poo free house back tho' .The beagle is totally house trained apart from leakage if he gets too excited !
