| I am in need of help before i go insane!! Ok so i have a 16 month male yorkie, who has recently decided to use my $900 couch as his PEE PAD!!! I have been dealing with him hiking his leg on everything and got that somewhat under control (any tips on the i would be grateful to hear). But here in the past 2 weeks, he has peed on my couch 4 TIMES!!! I stick his nose in it tell him no, lightly pop him and but him in his cage( which he is NEVER in there unless hes done something bad). I just don't know what to do. MY couch stinks like dog piss, and is you can't tell i'm a little ill right now about it because he has just done it again today. The thing is, he knows he has done bad. Because i saw a dark area on the cushion, went over to it to realize it was wet, he saw me looking at it and took off upstairs. I love my dog dearly! I'm a SAHM, so he always has attention from me. Always in my lap. Sleeps in the bed with me every night. I just don't understand why he is doing this???!!!!???? I can't afford to replace my couch because he is ruining it!!! PLEASE HELP!!! |

| No, he took off when you looked at the spot because he knew you were going to rub his nose in it, hit him and then lock him in his kennel. He'll never learn this way and all it will do is make him fear you and it will make him afraid of his kennel when that should be a place of comfort and security for him. Is he neutered? If you aren't going to breed him neutering may help. You need to get a good cleaner to remove all of the smell so he won't continue to use the same spot. Is he pad trained? This might help if you can't get him out when he needs to go. Have you tried crate training? This is very effective when done properly. You are a stay at home Mom...I am a retired Mom...and I get mine out at least every couple of hours. They are also crate trained and pad trained so I never have to worry about accidents in the wrong place. Hitting your dog and rubbing their nose in an 'accident' is never the right way to go...they will go when they need to...it's all about training and you need to help him learn how to let you know when he needs out or you need to train him to use a pad inside when you can't let him out. If you're not sure how to train him you can find all of that information right here on YT by using the search feature but I'm sure others will come along and offer their advice too. Being a stay at home mom will be very beneficial in the training process. You need to limit his space until he has earned your trust to not potty where he shouldn't. You need to keep an eye on him 24/7 and catch him in the act in order to correct him and then praise praise praise when he does it correctly. What you are doing now is teaching him to hide hat he needs to potty and actually makes the problem worse.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Might I add until you can get a good cleaning with enzymatic cleaner put plastic sheets on you couch. Also look up cleaning companies some will specialize in removing pet odors from furniture. Then as others suggested if you are not prepared to watch him 24/7 then when you can't watch him, put him in his crate. Walk him regularly for pee poo and for exercise. Another idea is to have a leash on a halter one end attached to dog and one to you, where you go he goes. Punishing him in the manner you have been is obviously not working. So try something new. Good luck

| I don't "hit" him. I barely even touch him. I don't care what anyone says, him pissing on my couch is not a accident! Its never in the same spot. He is crate trained and pee pad trained. I had a little issue with him hiking his leg here and there but got him to stop doing that pretty much. What so you suppose i do to show he's not doing right by pissing on my couch??? Because i'm out of things to try. I praise him when he uses he's pee pads, i praise him when he goes outside. I don't know what else to do.... |

| Maybe try some belly bands- This is not a long time resort. Your dog needs to know where to go potty. You have already got some good advice. It is all about taking them out, limiting the space, cleaning the spot with a good cleaner, and WATCHING THEM. I’ve heard good and bad thing about potty pads. Now that I have a house my male is getting trained to go outside. I will tell you one thing, my 4 year old still will lift his leg, and have accidents. So it does take A LOT of work and discipline to train them. I would NEVER or will EVER hit my dog or rub his nose in it.Hitting your dog, and rubbing their nose in the pee is not going to work. If you read any training books that is the worse thing you can do. Also I believe if you loved your dog dearly you would be more pro active in reading books, doing research, and maybe even getting him a trainer. I hope you take this positive and try to figure out the root of the problem.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Punishing a dog thru rubbing their nose in it, 'popping' them, or putting them in the cage (bc the cage shouldn't be a 'jail', it should be more like a safe place/refuge for them) isn't going to teach anything except perhaps fear, anxiety, and def confusion. So, are you saying he suddenly peed on the couch after 16 mths of not peeing there? I wasn't sure...but if that's the case, then I really would get him checked bc sometimes animals will pee in a new/different spot if they're in pain. This is bc they associate previous spots w/ pain. It could be a UTI, or something else. The fact that he looked at you, and ran upstairs is a good clue as to where he is at. He is scared, totally confused, and anxious. I would recommend def not punishing him. It will make things worse. Also, was he recently neutered? Any males I've ever had have always had accidents right after being neutered because of the added swelling and pain in that area. | |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Your dog has no idea what you are doing when you are pushing his nose in the urine so please stop doing this and "lightly popping him." Has your dog been neutered? This might be marking and not peeing, they come from the same place, but have a different purpose. Getting him neutered will reduce the marking if it isn't too firmly established, Joey only marks outside, but first you need to figure out if your dog is peeing or marking. Do you take him for walks? To get the protein out of soft surfaces, it's good to use an enzyme, such as Nature's Miracle. You may need more than one treatment and follow directions, but the enzymes are actually bacteria that eat the protein in the urine, and that is what causes the smell and tempts the dog to return to the spot. In fact they can't help, but return to the spot. So get the odor out, don't just mask it, because a dog will always be able to smell the protein.

| I believe that you do love your dog and because of that you owe it to him to do what it takes to fix the problem. Reading, researching, training... If all else fails and you simply can not do it then you learn the art of confining, constant supervision and belly bands. Whatever it takes to make it work because if you love him and can't cope what happens when he ends up in another home where they haven't loved him and they can't cope? He goes home to home, ends up in the pound or worse of all ends up abused or killed because someone else couldn't cope. Mine is 2 and was once doing perfectly in her pad training until we moved and her routine was thrown out of wack. She then started having accidents all the time. Because we are now in a rented house with carpeting it just couldn't happen. She now wears pants at all times when out and about the house. Several times a day at certain times I take her to the laundry room where her pads are and say "let's go potty" "take your pants off" and we stay in there until she goes. We then have our potty party where she gets BIG praise and special treats. She only had two accidents in the pants in the first two days and now will sometimes even ask to go potty. We will stick with this as long as it takes. I don't have to worry about the rented carpets, she gets her freedom and is learning. Win win.

| No wonder he runs and hides. Poor dog I would run and hide too if someone was popping me and throwing me in my "safe" place and using it like jail. Have you ever been to jail? It's horrid. My CaLi is not hardly 4 months and all I have to do is use a very disappointed tone and ask her "did you do that? Baaaad GirL" and no doubt does she put her ears back. She tries really tries to do better about accidents, even if she goes right by the door or a fluffy rug thinking it's the most like grass. You need to think more like a dog begging for guidance and your approval rather than Being "PISSED off" about your couch. It's kinda like...if you leave a bag a trash and the dogs get into it when you leave, use common sense and DONT leave trash where they can get it when you leave. DUH!! Cover your couch and keep an eye on your dog and be diligent and consistent in your training. It's more your fault than it is the dog. READ A BOOK, or do some research. sounds like your lazy.

| My Advice: Belly band, retrain to potty area, umbilical tethering, or keep in a confined area if you are not with him. No putting nose on mistakes, no physical correction, praise when he pottys in the right place. Read potty training threads on YT.
