Your dog has no idea what you are doing when you are pushing his nose in the urine so please stop doing this and "lightly popping him." Has your dog been neutered? This might be marking and not peeing, they come from the same place, but have a different purpose. Getting him neutered will reduce the marking if it isn't too firmly established, Joey only marks outside, but first you need to figure out if your dog is peeing or marking. Do you take him for walks?

To get the protein out of soft surfaces, it's good to use an enzyme, such as Nature's Miracle. You may need more than one treatment and follow directions, but the enzymes are actually bacteria that eat the protein in the urine, and that is what causes the smell and tempts the dog to return to the spot. In fact they can't help, but return to the spot. So get the odor out, don't just mask it, because a dog will always be able to smell the protein.
