| Help!!!Pottying in the house I have 2 yorkies that are 9 months old. I've had them since they were 8 weeks. I don't work so I have always been diligent about taking them out. I did treat them for a while when they would potty outside but I stopped doing that because it seemed they knew where to go.They are crated at night and they don't go in the crate unless we sleep in too late. I had them penned in one room when they were little then I switched that room to the kitchen (no carpeting to ruin). Then I let them in the kitchen and family room only. Now they have access to the whole first floor except my formal living room. Even after all of this they still go in the house. If we don't see them sitting at the door, they just go on the carpet somewhere. I tried the bell thing and they never took to it. I still ring it every time we go out but they won't ring it. I've had poodles, schnauzers, and scotties and potty training was never like this. They would at least whine or bark and let me know they had to go if I didn't see them at the door. I've heard yorkies are hard to train but this is ridiculous. My basement door is at the bottom of an open staircase. My little girl dog goes down there form time to time to find our cats. Yesterday I found three spots of old poop down there. I wanted to cry. I'm desperate. My next step is to sell them. My kids are so upset. Is nine months too young to expect them to be fully trained? Do yorkies ever fully train? Do any of you have one that is fully trained to go outside ONLY. I refuse to use potty pads. That just reinforces that it's ok to go in the house and it's gross. Thank you |

| Hi Welcome to YT. I have 2 yorkies one is 2 1/2 yrs old fully pottied trained and a 6 month old that is doing excellent on his potty training but I would not call him fully pottied trained...I don't give him a chance to fail...I'm very diligent on potty breaks...I take him out every 2 to 3 hours...while I do give him some free time in the house after he pottys, but if I'm unable to watch him I put him in his play yard...and I always treat after potty breaks even my 2 1/2 yr old wants her treat...so I would continue to give a treat after good potty breaks...if they don't potty outside no treat and I would not give them free run of the house..put them back in there crate or playyard until they do go potty outside...I believe the trick is treats treats treats and being consistent with the potty breaks...if you can't watch them put them in a confined space don't give them the chance to fail...and success started with you....if you are consistent with them they will let you know they have to go out...my 6 month old lets me know now when he has to go out...even if I have him in his play yard...but like I said above I still would not call him pottied trained...it takes months to fully potty train a pup and even at 9 mos I wouldn't say they are pottied trained...my 2 1/2 yr old didn't get full run of the house until she was well over a year old. PS...I would get a good odor cleaner like Natures Miracle and treat the areas of your carpet that they have pottied on...cleaning with soap and water doesn't get the smell out...and if they can smell potty, they will potty there again...Natures Miracle is the best...you can get it at petsmart...treat the area with Natures miracle spray it on the spots let it stand 15 to 30 minutes than clean with vinger and water.

| I know exactly how you feel. I too have a 9 month old that is not potty trained. I have worked so hard at this and still she makes mistakes. I had a great week last week, she went for a week with no mistakes and then all hell broke loose. She peed on the couch again and on the floor this week. I watch her like a hawk and take her outside when she does the potty walk, yet when she plays she just seems to forget. She is not too bad during the day but from 5 to 9 at night it is crazy. I sometimes have to take her out every half hour. That is her busy play time though and she drinks a lot of water because of playing and chewing. I know she knows she has to go outside and that's what makes it so frustrating. The funny thing is she sleeps in bed with me for 8 to 10 hours and never makes a mistake. I wish I had some answers for you but I don't. I am just keeping on the schedule and hoping she is just too young yet. I know when I had her spayed, the vet said she was not as developed inside as her age so I am hoping it is just that. Maybe once those bladder muscles tighten up things will be better. Selling her or placing her with someone else is not an option for me. I love her too much. I will just have to find a way to deal with it. From all that I have read Yorkies can be diffucult to train. I am hoping that by a year or year and a half she will have gotten it. |

| Molly is 14 months old and is pad trained. She has had no accidents in a month. We started potty bootcamp about a month and a half ago. I set the timer on the stove to go off every hour. When it went off, she was brought to her pad and stayed there until she went. She was rewarded with a little treat and lots of praise. The trick is to be consistent. Set the timer and no matter what you are doing take dog to the pad. Once the dog goes consistently every hour lengthen the time by 15 minutes increments. Stay on the time schedule for a week at a time. We only wait about 3 hours at the longest before we take her in. We still watch Molly closely and when she goes in by herself, she gets extra love and a slightly bigger treat. Don't give up. You must be consistent. We were inconsistent (lazy) in the beginning. P.S. We started out with two pad holders side by side until she was going on her own frequently. She is now down to one. Also, she will only pee on her pad about four or five times until she wants it changed. |

| I was just a short time ago posting just like you about Gilmore not potty training and me at my total wits end after months of poop and pee on the floor. I went through 3 trainers and was really ready to give up except I was so in love with him I knew I just had to keep going. He is a little over a year and he still gives no indication that he needs to go out. What finally worked for me was going back to 100 percent crating and tethering him to me for a full month. NO exceptions. I also put bins down all over the floor in the area he was going in even though I used Natures Miracle to remove any scent that was left. You can buy an ultra violet light in petco that you use in the dark to see where there is scent left behind. It is amazing to see the spots that were there. I never once in that month gave him a chance to fail. And it worked. I wish I had done that at first because it probably would have saved me months of frustration. I was so frustrated because I felt like I was putting in so much effort and I just didn't understand why it wasn't working. . Hang in there. I swear it gets better. | I have 4 yorkies and a maltese. All 5 of mine are trained with a few accidents. Yorkies are one of the hardest breeds to train. I use piddle pads, in the house. I have had many rescues and fosters. Most of them have had accidents in the house up until I had the carpet taken up and laminate floor put down. Back 11 years ago I had no animals because my yorkie passed away. We had this house built. My son decided he and his then future wife needed a dog. Well that puppy was a lovely little guy. We loved him but he has accidents on the floor. When I got my 2 a few years later they would go potty in the same place he did. I used everything to clean the carpet. It all stopped when the carpet came up. Every once in a while I will find a liitle poop hiding some where. That is Sadie. You can barely see it because she is a tiny girl. She knows better but I do not see it happen. I have the pads down so If I go out they all will use the pads. It works for us. I us the disposable ones. At 9 months they are still babies. Hang in there.
