Talking Log of Potty Training 10wk old puppy.

If this is not the correct section to post, I apologize in advance. Also, forgive me if there are any typos..

HOUSE BREAKING OSITO
We just recently got a 10 week old Yorkshire terrier, Osito (little bear in Spanish). I’m keeping a log of our housebreaking endeavors. This is the first time my girlfriend and I have attempted to house break a dog. If you have any suggestions, comments, constructive criticism please feel free to let us know. Osito has a kennel with an area to do his business, and we also set up a Potty Area (PA) about two feet from his kennel. This is a work in progress so some details may change through out the process.

MAY 26TH, Day 1

When the puppy arrived to the apt. we immediately setup the kennel/crate (don't know specific difference) and got him acquainted with it. We tried to get him to eat, and fed him some Nutra-cal (food supplement). The intended potty area is in the living room near where his kennel.

We bring the kennel into the bedroom, with the excuse that we need to here him to keep him quite and not wake the neighbors.

Day Two

Osito woke us up around 6:30 am, with whining and crying. We must remember to close the blinds, it can get very bright. I tried to comfort him by extending my hand and petting him. I let him out into the bedroom, which proved to be a mistake. My intention was to have him follow me an area with newspaper. Osito did not get the memo and decided to lay down a small gift at the doorway. Well, this was my error. I placed him back in the kennel, he whined for a bit but went back to sleep. We really should just focus on one potty area (PA).

Let just say there were many accidents.

Day Three

He wakes us up around 5:30 am; I’m really hoping this is not an everyday thing. We did want to go potty; he hasn’t gone in his kennel. He went but necessarily where I wished. I had to play with him for about 10min and then took him back to his kennel.

Later, we kept working on the paper, he did not immediately go on the newspaper after I brought him out in the morning, and I waited five minutes. I got up to make coffee and let him roam around thinking he didn’t want to go. Not even a minute goes by and I see him squatting down and reliving himself. I seize him, scold him, and take him back to the PA; he kind of finishes on the paper, so I reward him with a little treat. I play with him and let him explore for about 30 min. Leaving him alone to go down stairs to take out the trash out, along with the evidence of our accidents. I come back in and he scurries away form the “potty area.” I look around and notice the edge of a newspaper is wet! I missed it! I pick him up take him to the potty area and praise him, I hope it wasn’t too late.

I leave for work later. Janet comes home and has about the same success with him. At the end of the day we have about ¼ success to every accident. We bathed him for the first time; this was a slightly terrifying experience for him. I also decided not to leave any food with him during the night, but left the water.

Day Four

He whined a little in early morning but eventually went back to sleep. Around 8:20 I brought him out of the kennel. He may have peed during the night, but no signs of anything else. I picked him up and moved him to the potty area. Amazingly he immediately pees on the paper. I am overjoyed and praise and reward him. Yes, it seems bit weird to be happy about this sort of thing. He walks around and show signs of needing to go again, he leaks a bit on the carpet, scold him and take him to the paper. Then he starts to have another accident on hardwood, number two. He is picked up, scolded and moved to the potty area. He manages to finish on the paper, so I praise him. We are 2 for 2 at the moment. We play for a while and he is free to explore the living room. About an hour later he goes into his kennel, I shut the door and let him take a nap.

I am keeping reams of newspaper in the apartment, cleaning supplies at the ready, and treats at hand. One a side note, I learned that one should not use any chemicals with ammonia as this may confuse the dog to go where he smells it. Vinegar diluted in water works well apparently. I have also found it useful not to fully clean the PA. Using slightly soiled papers helps him recognize the area he is supposed to go on.

About 3 hours later I let him out of the kennel. Again, I carried him to the PA, he wasn’t right on the mark, but still praised him for a doing it in the general area. I have increased the size of the PA since it was rather small originally. I played with him for a few minutes and the placed him back in his kennel. I can hear him playing and tearing at the paper inside his kennel; debating whether or not to leaving the paper in there.

Janet returned home and let him out. He had 3 mishaps, 2 of which where on the area rug. She sternly and very obviously scolded him. He quickly understood that she was not at all pleased with him. She completely removed the area rug, Osito watched as she put the rug away, and let out a questioning bark. He loves to roll around and play on this rug, which now has been deemed off limits from him. He isolated himself near his kennel for several minutes, with the doggy in the mirror as his companion.

About an hour later, Osito redeemed himself to Janet. While they were playing, he suddenly stopped, scurried to the middle of the PA and peed. Janet was exceptionally excited to praise Osito, and it put them both a joyous mode. I think this is the first legitimate time he did it on his own and completely correct. They both went back to continue their game of throwing and chasing the stuffed mouse. I guess her tough love really worked on him. I believe she is more effective at scolding in general yet remaing very loving.

Sidenote: I left the dog unattended for a while when he was on the sofa. I jumped down and he let out a loud yelp, followed by some crying. I held him and checked to see if there was any serious damage. He was mostly shocked by the fall and was able to resume play soon after. The lesson, don’t leave the dog alone where he can hurt himself. Opps!

Enjoyed reading your log! Absolutely love the name you chose -- Osito -- they really do look like tiny bear cubs when we first get them. I am also working on the house training. I find mine have stopped going in their play yard area unless I am gone for quite a while. But when I let them out, I need to get them straight to the pads as they will be ready to go immediately. I think mine will go on the pee pad if they see it, but if they are busy chasing each other and no pad is readily in sight, they still go at will. Baby steps!

Thankful Osito was not seriously hurt with the fall/jump from the couch. They do think they are invincible at this age. Guarding them from jumping off things is a big job. AT 12 weeks, mine can now jump up on the furniture themselves so I have to be constantly on watch when they are out of their play yard. I don't want them jumping down on their own. Too easy to harm those tiny joints.

I look forward to continued reports of your house training progress as well as other antics! Puppies are so much joy!

FlDebra, Thanks for the reply. You are right, getting them on the pad asap is very important. Sometimes it takes him while. Have you tried putting out a pad in the yard they play so they can continue recognizing pads as appropriate areas.

I just got a puppy too. We are crate training him and the first few nights were so rough. What we have learned to do when he whines is to ignore him. He will eventually realize that the barking/whining/crying is a useless cry. If you take him out when he is crying, he will then associate the crying with getting attention from you. It has been 5 days now and last night, he didnt cry at all when we put him in his kennel and yapped for about 10 minutes at 6 this morning. A BIG improvement from the 2 hours, every 4 hours the first few nights. Don't let him out or give him any attention if he is barking or crying while he is in his kennel. Only take him out or give him treats when he is quiet. Today he peed on my other dog's bed. Infuriating!! we put him immediately in his crate and of course he yapped and yapped. My boyfriend sprayed water on kingston's face and he kept quiet after that. In regards to the potty training, I think you have the right idea. Whenever he wakes up from a nap, you should take him to the PA. Also about 10 minutes after he eats or drinks water. What I have learned ( although not completely changed my/kingstons lifestyle to do this) is that whenever osito is not doing a structured activity ( playing with you, eating, drinking, being directly watched) he needs to be in his crate. The crate and consistency are supposed to be one of the best ways to potty train your dog. I guess we can be thankful that yorkies' ecological contributions are small! Also, once he has peed on the rug, he will continue to. His scent is on there now. Kingston does the same thing in two spots in our house. Good luck!

Default Pottyy time

Well here you go..First you will need to be consistent and patience..My husband and I use the wee wee pads that have a smell to go pee on..I did not use the newspaper. SO Ihave no experience with that...We kept out little guy in a smaller area with a wee wee pad in the bathroom..every three hours we would take him in there and tell him potty time...At first we had the wee pads everywhere...They say when they go make a big deal about it (like and oscar) and give them a treat afterwood...Be consistent..IT WORKS..It is now 6months and my little guy goes to the bathroom in the bathroom and comes to us now afterwood for treats...Its pretty cute...It wipes his feet now really loud to tell us he went number 2..so he gets treat..We ALWAYS MAKE a BIG DEAL about it..He gets excited that we are excited..You will see it click in his brain...If you leave him in a big area he will have accidents, so start in a small area..We were told by DOctor not to crate him...He ended up getting a urniary tract infection due to crateting at night. DR. said that there bladders are to small to crate..So try the bathroom and work from there....Put his water and bed in one area and across the room put a wee wee pad or newspaper with that spray on it that attracts him..Good luck!!!IT will work!! P.S. Mine loves the area rugs too and it eventually stopped...Keep with it!!!

Thanks everyone for you input.

Here is the update

Day 5

2:00 am, Osito is found moving around in crate and there is a ominous smell. He apparently had to go and used the one side of the crate as the bathroom. Good for the most part, it looks like he started to go on his bedding but moved over to a corner to finish. I took him out to clean up the mess; he followed me around and then was put back to bed. Not sure if this good or bad, but he didn’t cry or whine when he needed to go.

Later that morning he was taken out first thing, and he successfully used the PA (potty area) twice. There is play and resting with each other. He really likes to cuddle with the both of us. It is rumored that the male Yorkies cuddle more than the females, but we don’t know for sure. He is becoming accustomed to playing for a while and then going back to his crate. I felt he was ready to rest before I was. He placed himself in the crate to lie down. At the moment we let him out and interact with him anywhere between half-hour to an hour and then place him in the crate. We play for 10-15 min and then just watch him or have him near us the rest of the time.

He has one minor accident before I left, but it was close to the PA.

Today he’ll be left home alone longer then normal. Jane is out of town and I’ll be at work later than normal. He might end up having to use his crate again. I don’t have the newspaper anymore in the crate because he is chewing it up. We are debating using a substitute material.. I don’t know if he’ll be getting confused by this.

Osito did have to stay home alone longer than normal, as I did not get back until an hour and a half later than I normally do. He did soil his crate, but he did manage to use the designated area. We will start leaving newspaper inside when need to be away. Jane and I discussed it and we don’t want Osito getting confused.

When I arrived he was very excited to see me and was bouncing off the wall with all that energy to play. He used the PA successfully twice, but had one minor accident on the hardwood. The 2nd time he was watching me do something in the kitchen, suddenly he let out a small yelp and bolted to the PA. He made me proud by using it for number two. LOL, yes I was happy to see him poo! He has been having trouble getting number two to land on the paper.

Sidenote: Osito found of Jane’s socks and absolutely loved it. He took into his crate before I left him alone during the day; he didn’t seem to care that I left. She had to be away this weekend, so I guess that why he really enjoys it. I tried giving him one of my socks, but he didn’t take it.

Day 6

Woke up on my own, no cries or whining, at least that I heard. Found Osito already up, I moved him out to the living room in his crate. He had already soiled in his crate, but he used the correct spot. I left newspaper in there overnight, and there were no signs of tearing. We played for a while and ended up peeing on the PA one more time before his nap, so far so good.

I was away for the early part of the morning; he used the padded area while I was gone. When I came home he wanted to be let out and used the PA, praised and gave him a treat. He really likes his treats and is starting to associate it with the PA. One time he went over to the PA, just stood there, and then ran over to me expecting a treat. Through out the day we had other successes and failures, so we are still at about a 50% success rate. This is much better than 10-20%.

Jane returned this evening, Osito was happy to see her. He only lays on her lap and not mine. What is up with that? She noticed that he has improved on the potty training and that he grew. She was only gone two days, but I guess I didn’t notice since I was there the whole time.

Sidenote: Purchased a Kong Ball for puppies, and he loves it, when treats are inside. Also got the Nature’s Miracle cleaner, it seems to work on keeping from going to the spots I don’t him to go. The treats he goes crazy over are “Wellness” treats that are made for puppies and contain lamb, salmon, fruits, and veggies.

Yea, he keeps biting the newspaper, and I am not a 100% sure if he is eating it. I've had the pee pad in there for the past few days, but with newspaper on top. Now, I'm just leaving the pee pad. I know it may be confusing for him, but I don't want him swallowing bits of paper. Suggestions for thoughts?

Can I make a suggestion, I went to a recent yorkie meet up and was speaking to a lady there about potty training if your working , she actually had one of these set up and had her crate attached to the opening.. she told me when she has puppies she always uses one of these, attaches the crate to it and they NEVER pee or poop in thier crate.. she told me it is wonderful for people who work long hours and teaches the dog they dont have to go to the bathroom in thier crate... she is a breeder and told me they usually cant hold it much longer the 1 - 2 hours so if you plan on leaving him in there he has no choice but to releave himself in there... it will give him a small area to play and also a pee pad to pee on if your not home , that way the poor thing does not have to sit in urine or poop if your not home..

I would not put a pad inside the crate. It will only let him think peeing in the crate is ok. Also you need to be more proactive about telling him where to go which means taking him to the pad whenever you think he needs to go. Try this method. Errorless Housetraining | Dog Star Daily

Thanks for the advice, and links Westiboy and Jeanm. We do have to leave him alone for many hours in the day. So, this weekend we are going to try to get something so he can have a pen are for him. Ideally we don't want him to relieve himself in the crate, so once we have the pen we'll encourage him to use the PA we'll set up with in it.

Here is the latest

Day 7
Woke up and moved Osito’s crate to the living room. I picked him up and placed him on the PA. He went on it and got his praise and treat. He does great in the mornings; I just wish he did this all the time. Before if left for work, he did everything right except for one time. Osito stayed home, highly entertained with his Kong ball with some food, treats, and peanut butter.

Jane came home and worked with him. She told me he had only one minor accident. She started teaching him how to play fetch. When I got home she tried to show me, but apparently he is very selfish with the stick when I got home. He loves to take into his crate and chew on it. Maybe he just doesn’t want me to have it, LOL. The rest of the day he had no accidents, so he only had two accidents through out the whole day, and it was just pee. Needless to say, we were all pleased about it. He really loves the treats he gets after he uses the PA, and has now started to go a little bit each time. Is he wising up?

I am soo very very happy you are choosing a pen area.. they do have them at petsmart and also baby stores..just that little puppy only has the bladder the size of a quater and you are gone many hours.. it can only be expected.. a pen with is crate , water and food and toys will surely make him more apt to pee in the PA as opposed to on his bedding...

After bringing him out to the leaving room in his crate, Osito peed in the PA area. I waited around for him to do number too but he did not. Soon I discovered that he already done that in the crate. I played with him for a little bit, but had two minor accidents; so much for an accident free day. Obtaining a pen will have to be a priority this weekend.

We both worked with him the rest of the day. He has become more playful in the past few days, and with more energy. All in all, we had about a 65% success rate this day.

Day 9
There were many accidents today. About 10% good, the rest, well, let’s just say we were not thrilled. We are going to try for a better day tomorrow.
