We got Max less than a week ago, so maybe I'm expecting too much, but I'm getting pretty frustrated.

Max has not yet pee'd or poo'd, either outside or on his pee pads. We have a carpet cleaner, so no stains yet (not counting the Dr Pepper stain that I havent yet shown my husband)...but I'm curious to know how long to expect this for.

We take him out many many many times during the day. First thing in the morning, about 15 minutes or so after he first eats/drinks and then often throughout the day. He never goes when we are outside. Instead, he holds it for when we get in....as soon as I turn my back, he will tinkle (or more) randomly. Corners, hallways, the middle of the floor...you name it.

I know that this is not his fault. His previous owners kept him crated most of the time, and he basicly lived in his own filth. Today I bought a baby gate to keep him in the kitchen where he cant do any damage, but that is pointless because I dont want him to feel like I'm abandoning him in there like his previous owners did with him in his crate.

He pee's and poo's whenever and wherever he wants. I never seem to catch him in the act, but I dont feel like he is trying to hide it, nor do I feel like he is doing it to rebel. He is just doing it because it is all he knows. How do I correct this?

When you take him out... don't come back in until he pees. If it's the morning, you know he HAS to pee. So just wait it out until he does. Maybe have a treat ready in your pocket. He can't hold it forever. He'll eventually go. When he does, make the biggest thing about it! Praise him like he's never been praised and give him his treat. Then he'll hopefully realize that this is what you want, since he seems to not even know what he's supposed to do. GOOD LUCK!

Oh! And what I have normally done... when he pees in the house, sop some up with toilet paper and take it to where you want him to pee (outside/pee pad). Then show it to him and praise his as if he actually peed there. He should eventually associate that if there is pee there, he gets praised.

We crate trained Max but since your baby was already trained that it's okay for him to go in his crate...poor baby. Max wouldn't go in his crate and as soon as we took him out we would put him on his puppy pad until he went potty and then we would reward him with a treat. Sometimes you have to wait a while. Then we started taking his puppy pad outside and putting it on the grass because he would also hold it in until we got inside to go on the puppy pad. I would stay outside forever and he'd hold it until we got in. It took 1 day for puppy pad training and 6 months for outside. It took a great deal of patience and persistence. I also only rewarded him if he went outside after a while and not for going on the puppy pad so he would choose outside over inside. Now, he only goes outside and totally ignores his puppy pad. I'm not really sure why I keep one down.

First things first, congratulations on your new baby! My Tucker had some very similiar problems, because his original owners left him in his crate most of the time and he had no choice but to eliminate in there. He still can't be crated for long without relieving himself. I had the same frustrations. He would not go and not go on the pee pad and then he would walk away and squat on the carpet. One thing you have to remember is that you have to watch him 100% of the time, no turning your back! It's tough but in a few months it will be so worth it! It took weeks before Tucker actually went on the pad, he didn't like anyone watching him go and so he wouldn't go until you turned your head and then you weren't able to place him on the pad

When I finally saw him walking away and a fresh pee spot on the pad I went crazy, threw a party, and gave him a treat. It only took a few more weeks of that and he's 85% potty trained and the few times he's had accidents it's been my fault because he didn't have access to the pad. When we move we'll be training to go outside, but until then the washable pee pads have worked for us. Good luck and keep at it!

If he poos in the house, take it to where you want him to go potty, whether it's a potty pad or outside. Same if he pees, wipe it up with a paper towel or napkin, and take it to where you want him to go. Sometimes that helps.

Does he eat around the same times everyday? I homecook for my boys, and I feed them at the same times everyday. They are pad and outdoor trained, as we get alot of snow in the winter. They normally go first thing in the morning, right after eating, right after hard playing, after or during a walk, last thing at night, etc. Of course, if yours is still a puppy, he will need to go more often. If you free feed, try to keep track of when he eats and drinks, and take him out soon after. In the morning, stay outside with him until he goes. Any time he goes where he should, praise him and praise him some more. Maybe carry a few treats outside with you to give him as a reward.

I don't think there's anything wrong with gating him in the kitchen while you are trying to potty train him. As long as you pay lots of attention to him, he will be okay. If he's still a small puppy, a playpen or expen might be helpful.

I agree with all the suggestions above..
Praise him and wait as long as need till he does it outside.. so FIRST THING in the morning is the best to start,. cause he needs to go i figure..
Also when he does it inside.. Say NO and then pick him up and put him outside.. so he knows when he does something inside he need to do it outside and the treats are working great.. so he knows its a party when he does it outside !

Believe me it will get better. Kodie is now 5 1/2 months old, in the beginning he
did the same thing, just be consistent and praise him when he does go.
Hang in there he'll do better, I know it's frustrating.

Kanda welcome to the excitement of training a yorkie your baby sounds just like mines and still have been unable to truly grasp when he needs to go potty. Since I work most the day it is hard for me to keep an eye on him so I put him in a doggy day care which I am eventually probably going to have them train him also while he is there but that is going to cost.

I have tried almost everything people have told me, and I have read. He stayed in a x-pen during the day and his crate at night, I would take him out constantly for walks when I saw him sniffing around the house it was my fault for allowing my mother while she was visiting giving him full access to the entire house as I tried to tell her to leave him in the pen so but only to come home and see him running around the house.

I have set pee pads around that he does not even borther to use really would like to know how people get them to go to the pads or even a litter box on there own. I have setup a spot where I wanted him to potty outside reinforced it with "go potty" he looks at me to say what do you want me to do. We can stay outside for 30min-hr and he does nothing what so ever as soon as we come inside I take his collar off he runs off and potty's. People say they cant hold it for very long well I say they can lol!

I get up very early to walk him before I have to get rdy for work he started at one point to go outside but completely has taken a u-turn on that and he just wont go outside or on the pee pads unless I confine him in his x-pen where he has no choice to go and will constantly jump up and down to get out but does not even recongize this area as a place to go unless he knows I am not coming back to get him.

I think he needs a complete training revamp but my time is very limited to properly train him I think as I am not there for 8 hours of the day so I need to turn to professional training for him.

Congrats on the pup... the problem seems to be that he's allowed to go wherever/whenever he wants. Unfortunately until he's better trained you have to keep him confined and restrict his space in the home, its the only way he'll learn. If you go into a different room and cant keep an eye on him, he should be confined so that he wont get into trouble. This can be a looong training process (be advised

Kelly, congrats on your new little boy. I have faith in the fact that once he is relaxed and knows he is there to stay and is loved.. he will turn around really quicky.. but it can take time.. you have been given some great info, and by posting this helps to know your not alone in this..keep us updated....

We are going through the same thing with Kayla. She sleeps with us and my husband gets up with her around 2:00a.m. and takes her to the garage to tee tee on her papers. (which she will do)But, the rest of the time she will even go out the doggie door with the schnauzers and still come right back in and tee tee. She is 10mo. old. Please somebody, tell me it gets better. The schnauzers were house broke way before they were 6mo. old.

Kanda....when you take him out...don't just stand there...make him walk around...on a leash or following you in the yard. Walking stimulates them to go.

I can almost guarantee you...immediately upon getting up...he has to go. All of mine go immediately in the am...and we wait until they've gone both. Ramsey would love to go pee and immediately come back inside, but she does have to poop...just takes a little while for that to kick in.

I always repeated go potty to mine...now Ramsey you do not have to tell...sometimes Reese gets distracted...HIM I have to tell and he'll potty on command.

It does get better...promise. Sorry Max spilled his dr pepper.

PS Our momma fish died today...sans vodka.

I have a 12 week old puppy and we are going through the same thing with Bear....It has been 1 week since I brought him home and he has already started to show signs of being potty trained!!...I have to admit tho that it has been a very stressful week but well worth it!!...I just kept a watch on him to see what he does and when he does his "deeds" It helps that I am a stay at home mom so I can really watch him good...but I have noticed that Bear goes first thing in the morning and yes you have to sit outside with him until he goes & does both "deeds" otherwise he will go on my carpet!! ugh!! but after that I just take him out about every 20 minutes and I make a big deal out of it I clap my hands and say lets go potty, lets go potty and I walk to the door...I think Bear is getting the hang of it because now he waits for me to put my shoes on!!...smart little cookie!! Just hang in there and give the little guy the love he needs and he wll eventually come around....be paitent and consistent! and watch for the signs!
