| Question for breeders!! Help baby #2 out Hi there, Baby #2 is out but still attached, read other thread on it and it seemed it was fine as long as eventually the placenta came out. My question is the baby seems like it is gasping but yet still atatched. He is not suffocating right!!

| Thank you Patti Lucy chewed off his unbelical cord..I think too close..I hope he will be ok. I called the emergency vet and talked to her and she said everything I was doing was good. He was still gasping so I did suctioning and swinging..he seems better but still worried about him. Also what about the unbelical cord. The vet lady said to put pressure on it. It is bleeding a tad.

| I soooo wish I could help...but I would suggest to call the emerg. vet again and again until you are comfortable with Lucy and her babies...I am praying hard for her tonight!! I wish a breeder would sign on!! Keep us posted. I think you are doing a great job!! I would imagine that if there is just a tiny bit of blood that it is pretty normal?? Just make sure the bleeding subsides over time. Sounds like Lucy's instincts are kicking in if she is eating the placenta and chewing off the umbilical cord... Dawn |

| I was reading on a few sites to use dental floss to stop the bleeding on the cord. Some sites say to clamp and then cut the cord 1 inch from belly they say cutting is better in case the mother bites it too close to the puppy which can cause a hernia. Cut on the side of clamp away from the puppy. Oh how I wish a breeder was here, but you are doing great! You are in our thoughts tonight |

| Hi everyone, I didn't manage to tie or cut cord. Lucy chewed it off or she pulled it off. He seems ok but he was bleeding from it last night but not tons. He doesn't seem to be bleeding from it now. But I am concerned about him because he had a hard time breathing to start then now is barely making peeps and seems very lethargic. Ofcourse like skin babies that could be normal. ALso the pups aren't nursing yet...Can anyone tell me if I should be supplementing with some goats milk or nutrical just for now??

| Just for anyone else whelping....You need to get pups well aspirated immediately after birth..there are links posted all over here to whelping sites with methods for flinging and bulb aspiration. as for the cords...I usually just use my (well scrubbed and I mean surgically well ) thumbnail to crush/shred and hold the cord pinched between my thumbnail and forefinger held up against the pups belly. I allow the mom to chew the cord up to my thumbnail, but she can't get close enough to damage the pup by chewing too close and the tight grip keeps her from tugging too much and causing umbilical hernia. I use my other hand to rub the pup to stimulate. When the pup is released from the cord.... keeping pup's head down to drain fluids during this process...I will clamp the remainder of the cord if it is still bleeding (usually it's not) and work on getting good breaths. If the placenta is still not delivered before pup is off cord...I use a second clamp on the cord that is exposed from the mom's vulva so I can help her deliver the placenta after I get the pup going if she needs assistance.

| and just a quick note....I've been lucky with having moms that are very vigorously involved with cord removal immediately on presentation...If it takes them more than a half a minute or so to chew through the cord at the pup (while you are holding it)..cut/shred the cord yourself and get that pup aspirated and BREATHING. If a pup is stuck or breech during delivery..don't wait for mom's help...clamp/cut and get them breathing asap.

| Really bummed. I am soo bummed to tell you this and everyone else. I took my little baby boy to the vet as soon as possible and when we arrived he was not doing so well. As the vet ( another guy-who I have seen yrs ago and is more knowlegeable) took a quick look and said his belly is infected. His chances were slim to none. As we quickly discussed the options, it was apparrent that not much more could be done. The vet noted at this point the little boy was already fading and that he really wouldn't make it.....I made the tearful desicion of putting him out of his misery since the vet told me he could go on like this for more hrs and slowly fade. I thought that was terrible way to go. I am upset with the emergency vet last night who told me it was fine that his belly bled a little and just to put pressure on it and that puppies are pretty resilient. ( I knew this wasn't really the case for small dogs) Then I called this morning to my vet office and the other lady vet relayed a message to me that a little bleeding/blood was nothing to worry about and to start bottle feeding if they aren't nursing...My other question. When I went to the vet office this morning because little boy was just not doing well. The vet said there was nothing i could have really done and that it happened because lucy chewed the cord to close. I wish I didn't turn around to get my scissors to cut the cord and wait a min to see if the placenta was going to come out with the little boy....by that minute she decided to chew the cord off. I feel terrible and bummed now but my only concern is for the little girl and mama. I have syringe fed 1/2 cc the little girl as soon as I got home since she just wouldn't latch on to mama's teat again, even with my help. She only did it once. Oh wait just helped her again and she latched! Yes! Thank you Feminvstr for being available for advice and backing up my suspicion that the little boy did need to go to the vet asap. Poor Lucy I brought the dead baby back to her and she really wanted it,and licked it etc..then looked for him when I took him away a couple mins later. My heart is broken and I did the best I could so please be kind. Thanks all.
