| We are fortunate to not have a huge mosquito problem here. I do not give mine heartworm meds. k Owensk9. It is unfortunate that you refuse to look at the latest research for the sake of your dogs. |

BINGO...my dogs have taken heartworm meds for 30 yrs ...it kills everything except tapes... If you bring in new bitches, it may be nexcessary to use a course of Panacur if you do not know the breeder's habits well. A bitch can have a negative stool result, but pass worm larva during and after whelping and nursing...the larva live in the tissues, but do not hatch in the adult dogs.. If I had any pups test positive for parasites..I would attack the problem at the root cause. Panacur all adults, treat the house and yard. Put all on heartworm meds..and you might just find your dogs free of worms forever...there has to be a reason someone like me can avoid these problems for so many years.. At one point I had 20 Yorkies and 3 Doxies...they were certainly not confinded to the house and kept apart for each other..I boarded friends Yorkies and had stud service..stilll no worms...because Heartworm meds kills them..read the box. As to give heartworm meds...those worms kill, so I will chance it. Last edited by YorkieRose; 06-23-2010 at 09:51 AM.

Council Bluffs is located on the east banks of the MO River with a large body water/lake near by too. I would think any evidence of mosquitoes, large or small would be of some concern.

| Ok, so I have a question I have been meaning to ask my vet. I will see what he say's when I take the pups in to see him in the morning. Do dog's have a tolerance to meds like humans do? As in let's say antibiotics. If the vet gave a certain antibiotic for every problem your pup/dog went in for, would the same antibiotic always do the job?

I know that my brother & sister in law live in Spirit Lake/northeast corner of the state where winter months are harsh and have their pets on heartworm meds year round.....In visiting them there are mosquitoes....it's humid and hot in the summer.

You do not need a huge misquote problem to have an incidence of heartworms, we hardly have any here, in AZ but the vet recommends heartworm meds because it's such a painful disease to treat, prevention is so important. I understand that this is a personal choice, but as breeder, I hope you are not recommending this, since even your vet recommends the heartworm medication.

Not saying that it is impossible, but so far have never had a dog with heartworm. But since it is a good preventative for most all worms, I will consider starting mine on them.
