This is the 20th century people!! If you are testing your dogs you should not have worm problems. Back in the day some people used to worm all their pups. We have come so much farther than that in vet medicine now.

My vet will not even talk about meds unless he has performed tests.

And who profits from that --the VET ! And the best place in the world to pick up parvo-distemper and such is the VETS OFFICE. I can't tell ya the times I've taken pups to the vet for health papers and ran straight into a big case of PARVO !! thank goodness I had vaccinated early. But if you guys want to CHANCE it !! I agree, to disagree!!!!!!! Hopefully the op will check with her get before injecting chemicals if not nessasary!!!!

How do you know that you ran into a case of parvo, and why did the pup need to go to the vet?

I take mine to the vet in a carrier, I insist that they sanitize the scale before I will put any of my dogs on it and I do not take then to the grassy area to potty.. They have never picked up any disease at the vets office.

Let me begin with I've never had a case of worms. However, do take in a a fecal sample as a precautionary measure and have my girl checked prior to breeding. Always say never say never.

Let me add, if your girl is on heartworm meds. Which I usually don't administer prior to a breeding and throughout gestation period. I do continue when the pups are two weeks old. A natural way of deworming your pups. For those continue your heartworm meds. Your girls & puppies don't have worms. Well maybe tapeworms as the heartworm doesn't eradicate those.

If you had read my statement --I take pups to the Vet to get health papers-(you must have health papers to ship ---it's the LAW !!) And you must have never seen Parvo--ya know it if ya see it !! And ya smell it---and the Vet says "I hope that pup is vaccinated as we have a parvo dog today " and I replyed it's vaccinated but I'm going home and re vaccinate because of this and the vet sayed "GOOD you need to !"
THAT'S HOW I KNEW !!!!!!!

And ya need to reserch Parvo---it's air born if ya walk into the Vet to ask a question or pay a bill without your dog with ya and you walk back into your home or kennel you can track parvo into your homes and your dogs get sick and die withen hours of getting sick ! Bloody poop--vomiting it's bad REAL BAD !! We live in the country Coyotes get parvo and spread it every where they roam---all dogs or of the same family coyotes-fox--etc get parvo and spread it every where---soooooo I vaccinate very regular !

Thanks for the info Mary. I have always started back up after weaning. Never had worms but I will talk with my vet about starting earlier.

I think the key word is vet. I have learned that if you have a good vet they will help you through the process. And I have finally found a vet whom I can trust. I have been through many!

I guess this is one of those topics that everyone will never agree on but it is nice that we can share our experiences and views.

Years ago I would automatically worm pups and occasionally I would see a round worm pass. My vets had no problem dispensing worm medicine because I think the majority of vets promote worming at two week intervals. One of the vets I use now is a holistic vet and he does not believe you should worm unless the dog has worms. None of my dogs have had any worms in about the past 5 years but my dogs are raised in my home, not in cages and not on dirt. For those that let their dogs outside it is very necessary to get stool samples checked on your dogs. All moms should be checked and wormed before breeding because roundworms and hookworms can be passed to the pups through the milk. Hookworms can kill a puppy as young as two weeks if the pup has a bad case of them.

Tapeworms are a different story. For a dog or puppy to get tapeworms they have to actually eat a flea that has eaten a tapeworm segment. Worm medicines that kill roundworms and hookworms won't kill tapeworms so if you see the little tapeworm 'rice' segments in the stool you need to get a wormer from the vet. The best preventative for tapeworms is to keep the fleas under control.

You don't have to take your dog or your puppies to the vet to get a stool checked. Most vets will let you drop off a stool sample to be checked.

As for vaccinations, my feeling are that vaccinating before 8 weeks is not best for the puppy and can actually be harmful.

Hey people--heartguard also kills round worms and hooks---so may be your worming your dogs and don't know it ! Is heartguard also feeding them poison ?

You know, I think you are NOT getting the big picture! No one has a problem vaccinating & deworming puppies! The problem lies when a "breeder" is vaccinating & deworming for NO REASON! If a puppy does not have worms, why inject them for no reason! Yes, it is all has chemicals, but were you and I differ, is that I don't inject chemicals UNLESS NEEDED, not for the hell of it like you do!!!
