| Please discuss signs of mastitis ? My bitches pups are 12 days old . She had 7 puppies. I just clipped the nails of the pups because they felt like pins on my arms not alone on Angels belly. They are suckling on areas between the teats and sometimes on each other. I have been rotating them so they get to the teats closer to her tails. My littlest pup was 3.8 oz and now she is 8.2 oz. she is doing well but I am very attentive to them all day long. Can I use lanolin on any teats that look iritated? Should I use cool or warm compresses to her teats to ease any discomfort from the pups, suckling and their nails digging into her? Should I take her temperature more often if I feel her underside is warm to the touch? |

| If any of her milk sacks become red and hard (and hot) she should be seen by a vet right away. Sounds like she is doing well, though. I don't know about using lanolin. |

| I would not use Lanilon on them. use warm compresses IF you think there is a problem with Mastitis. Mastitis turns the teat into a hard spot running from the teat to areas around the teat also. If you notice this, make sure you put a pup on that teat. If it persists for longer than a day or so, you will have to get her on antibotics. |

| Please look at the pictures on Post 11 in the thread listed below: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...6576-help.html The female pictured has a fairly advanced case of mastitis. You do not want to wait until they get that bad before getting help. I always put my females on amoxicillin at the first sign of hardness in the breasts. |

| A bitch with Mastitis is sick...Her breast tissue will be swollen, reddened, purple looking and hard...They will be very uncomfortable to touch...painful... She may be lethargic, not want to eat...will have a fever...and may even refuse to let pups nurse... If I have a mom with these conditions I will apply a warm compress and then gently express some milk to make the breast softer...You can tell by the color of the milk if she has an infection...If so Mom will need to go to the vet for antibiotics... Make sure to give some yogurt if antibiotics are prescribed... Mastitis is a medical emergency and can be life threatening if not taken care of! Hope all is well!

| I am so thankfull for everyones advice-information. I was able to catch this before it became a big problem. Angels teats are still irritated from the pups nails. I took her to the vet yesterday and he started her on Ceph a drops and she is 90 % better. She has her energy back and appetite has stayed good. I have just added some plain yogart for her since the antibiotic, I have made her whelping pudding with lactose free milk. she hasn't had diarrhea since. I had been giving her cottage cheese too much cottage cheese, after she whelped the pups and she had eaten 4 placentas. She hasn't went back to laying down to feed the pups yet without assistance. Otherwise she stands or sits to nurse them. Any way since the swelling ( with the bumps or dimpled appearance) didn't start right away then it was hard to spot. I had convinced the redness, and purplish appearance to her teats was just superficial irritation from having 7 puppies and their nails. |

| I too am happy to hear she is feeling better...Just a suggestion...Make sure that when mom is getting in and out of her whelping box she is not hitting her teats on the box...The trauma will cause Mastitis!... Thanks for the update!

Some times I think she is going through a depression with the loss of Buddy the sire of her pups. He was killed May5th. She has no desire to go play. She is eating well and getting enough water. I am not sure what is going on. Because this is my first litter also. I am wondering if she knows I am there also so she doesn't have to be a doating mother. | |
