| How do you feel about tip jars? I'm not talking about tip jars that the waitstaff put in their collective tips at a restaurant or bar, but tip jars on the counters of take out places, Subways, Starbucks, pizza joints, etc, where there is no wait service? I have no problem with tipping every now and then to a place where I am a regular, but still I don't do it every single time. How do you guys do it?

| It is pending how my service was if I tip to one of the tip jars. I use to be a waitress a long time ago and so I am very critical of customer care. |

| I'm not sure how I feel about it. That's like having a tip jar at a drive-thru window at a McDonalds. I used to work at a small fitness studio where not only did I clean the equipment, but I also prepared smoothies for every customer (by myself) and also took care of gym membership payments etc. People would walk in they would nod at me and I had their order memorized and ready for them by the time the class was over. And even with that level of customer service that I provided, I was embarrassed to have a tip jar at the counter.

| Tipping afterwards when you pay makes sense to me, but the tip jar, right there on the counter, when you pay first, then wait for the food and the service. Then what? I feel like they try to guilt you into tipping. There was a tip jar at the KFC, for example.

| I have mixed feelings about it. I was in the business for many years and that's how I supported myself and put myself thru college. I kinda think that it takes away from people who actually "wait" on people. What I mean is that when I was waitressing, my hourly wage was half of minimum wage due to tips. I think patrons get tired of feeling obligated to tip and as a result, don't tip as well. I am not sure what salaries are these days but I would imagine that people who work at places like Subway, Starbucks, etc., make at least minimum wage--not to say that it's a lot of money. I just don't want to take away from people who traditionally work for tips.

| That's how I feel about it. I don't know I think a waiter/waitress at a restaurant makes more sense to me because the service is more personalized, and requires a lot more work/effort etc. But at a fast food restaurant? I just don't think the service provided there needs tipping. That's just my personal opinion though.

| Prime example, I guess I just feel it's getting out of control. When I went on vacation to Key West, there was a tip jar at every counter! I know that merchandise places are not places that tips are given.

| Well, when we go out to eat, we always tip really well. Counter jars...sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Sad to say, but I believe it's depends on what kind of mood I'm in at the moment.

| I've seen tip jars a lot at Cold Stone ice cream. I guess it can be a little personalized, since they make your ice cream to order, but still I don't tip there. Plus another reason is they sing when you tip, and I feel like they are forced to do it. I didn't know waitstaff was less than min wage? I thought it had to be at least min wage? Wow. I have no problem tipping 15% at a sit down restaurant, even with mediocre service, but with great service I will tip more. I don't get to eat out at sit down dinners very often at all, so when I do, I want to be taken care of. I have a story of a cheap tipper, my mom. She took me out for my birthday at a korean bbq place, and I paid. Yes it was for my birthday I paid $5 and some change over to just leave it for tip. My mom says that's too much! I say how much should I leave? She says, $4 OMG One Freaking Dollar. I said let her have it, she makes money off tips, what's $1 for me to keep? We were taken care of. The waitress comes back to collect the tray, and what does my mom shout out as she takes it? Oh, keep the change! Like she was the one who paid and left such a huge tip.

| Wow $7.25 for being a smoothie girl a couple years ago? That's really not a bad pay! I remember when min wage was $5.25. That was when I first started working. Robinsons-May, yup they paid min wage. I hated that place.

| I don't mind them- because at least where I see them they don't seem to be pushing you at all- they are just there if you WANT to tip. The most common place I see them is Starbucks/ Dunkin Donuts- and I feel like those people do provide me a service. At the Starbucks I went to regularly by my old place- they had my drink ready every morning before I even got to the counter. Sure they might only save my a minute- but it is the thought. Extra caramel sauce? extra whip? grande in a venti cup? no problem- other places might add on little fees. I usually use a card (starbucks card or debit card) so I will just throw a 5 or 10 in every month or so- a little extra on the holidays.

| Well, for the customers the only thing I did was make smoothies for them. But I had to open up, set up the equipment, clean the bikes, pick up towels, clean bathrooms...etc But yes, I did not complain about the pay...but I only worked 4 hours a day (because the gym is only open four hours in the morning for classes and then 4 hours at night for the night classes) I had the morning shift.

| I'm always so uncomfortable with the whole tipping thing - guilt, condescending, reward, punishment, professional or not. Lots of judging going on. A number of jobs require good customer service for regardless of the hourly salary do not seem appropriate for tips - but others do.... My Mother is old and I hear her friends talking about how they don't feel like they can ever go out to eat because they do not have much money and don't feel like they could afford to tip -- something is wrong here......
