Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | Help me with my 7 week old pup! Hi, A friend of my boyfriend has 3 yorkies (2 bitches and 1 dog) and one of the bitches had a littler of puppies which I took my pup from. I was told I could pick her up when she was 8 weeks old as that is the youngest they can be taken here in the UK. She is the runt of the litter and when I went to visit her she was quite thin and would be pushed out the way at feeding time by the other pups. I picked her up last week thinking she was 8 weeks old as told, she is very small but like I said she was the runt and to be honest I have never had a yorky before so didn't really know what to expect. Anyway I had her for about 3 days when I found out she was 6 weeks NOT 8 weeks! I was furious. I was about to give the pup back but to be honest she is doing better with me then she was back with her mam, she has put on weight and has come out of her shell and is very playful. And to be perfectly honest I didn't want to give her back to them because if they would give her away so young they arn't exactly responsible so I would rather she was with me where she is well looked after. I took her to the vets yesterday and the vet says she is fine, she checked her ears, eyes and heart and asked me all sorts of questions about feeding and going potty and said she was doing well. She also said she weighs about a pound. She is eating well and has put on weight, she is on canned puppy food (meat) 4 times a day eating all of her meals and I did have her on puppy milk but the vet told me to take her off it and just give her water or she may get the runs. She is going potty regularly and everything looks normal and she seems much happier then when I visited her before we got her. I am still very angry at the fact they would let the pups go so young and also at the fact that they told me she would be 8 weeks old then. But the friend who I got her from, his dad has just died and he was the one who went out to work and brought the money into the house. Now he is gone his mam is working but they are really struggling for money and I think they needed the money from the puppies ASAP without having to spend money on there shots which is why I think they have done what they have done. It dosn't make it right but in a way I see whats happend. So basically I need to know if there is anything I should be doing? The vet says she is fine and to keep doing what I am doing with her at the moment. She is booked in for her first needle next friday and until then she is not going outside and has not been in direct contact with my other dog (who has had her shots) and she has also been wormed with worming syrup. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks xx

| You will get all the help you need here, just keep checking back. Is that her in your Avatar? She is very cute but boy is she small (as I am sure you know). The one thing I know is do not take her out in public around other dogs and it's probably a really good idea not to take her outside, I would start with pad trainings until she is a little older and has had all her required shots. Also you want to make sure she continues to eat and drink on a regular schedule. When Sophie Kate was younger my vet recommended I get either Nutrical or Corn Syrup and keep it on hand, if she starts acting lethargic give her a tiny bit. I am sure one of our more experience Yorkie owners will advise you on the danger signs to watch for with your little girl. Good luck.

Yeah thats her in the pic, it was taken last week so she would have been around 6 weeks then. All the pics of her on here were either taken last week or the week before when we were visiting her so she will be around 5/6 weeks on those pics, I will try and take some tonight so you can get an idea how she looks now but its not that much difference shes a bit bigger and fluffier. I havn't had her outside and wasn't going to because I heard they can get bad things from the grass before they have there shots so yeh I'm training her on puppy pads at the mo and shes doing really well on them (I also have her in a crate at night so shes safe). Thanks I will have a look for the syrup! The only thing the vet did mention was her ears were a bit waxy, she told me to put a drop of olive oil in and massage them to work the wax out... what are your thoughts on this? I havn't done it just yet as I havn't had a chance to go to the shop for some I'm planning on doing it tomorrow if it's ok to do so. Thanks again x

| I have never heard of using Olive oil to clean their ears, Sophie Kate does not have any problems with her ears thank goodness. I would search Yorkie Talk on cleaning ears and see what you find. That is another thing I wanted to add, make sure if you have questions to use the search feature on Yorkie Talk - there are so many threads on subjects and I bet you would find your answer. When I was a new Yorkie owner I used this site for a lot of my education on Yorkies. If you ask a question you almost always get an answers and sometimes more than one.

| You seem to be doing a great job!! Congrats on your puppy and how well you are taking care of her. The only thing I would add is to make sure she gets plenty of rest. Little puppies need to sleep as much as they need to eat and play. Please keep us informed as to how well your baby is doing.

So do you think I am doing the right thing by keeping her? I really dont want to give her back to them because I dont trust them to look after her properly.. and she seems much better with me even though I have only had her a week. She has put on weight like I said and is so playful compared to when we would visit her she has really came out of her shell She sleeps often but not too much.. She usually has a little sleep after shes had her food and gone potty and she has the odd short nap when she is being cuddled too. I will try and post some new pics tonight so you can all see her size now, and do you think 1 pound is a normal weight for this age? Thanks x

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | Also I checked out the threads on cleaning ears and everyone seems to be using a product from the vets/pet store... so I think I will go to the pet store and get a proper ear cleaning product instead of the olive oil. The vet told me to use olive oil but seen as you havn't heard of using it for this reason before I am reluctant to stick it in her ears! atleast with somthing from the pet store there will be instructions on what to do as I have never done it before x

She eats well and has a little fat round tummy on her About the people who I got her from... They would have known exactly how old she was I think they were just desperate for the money in the situation they are in at the moment so I think they pretended she was older so they could sell her quickly before having to pay for her shots. Its not right but I think they were desperate. They havn't told me this but I know his father has just died and they are really struggling for money so I am sure thats what happend. My older dog has gone in the huff a bit.. but then she has been the only dog for a long time and is very spoilt. At first she wouldnt even sit in the same room as the pup but now she does. She is still very distant and jelous but she seems to be slowly coming round, hopefully it wont be too long until they are friends. I think it will be easier for her once my pup is a bit older and can play with her properly so fingers crossed. Thanks x

| Hi. I'm in the UK too. Sounds like everything's ok if the vet's happy. Many people over here do rehome at 6 weeks though it is best to wait until 8 weeks. I did get my first yorkie (years ago) at 6 weeks but she was a chunky little thing and she and her brother (the entire litter) were driving their mam mad. As she was eating well and was healthy we had her earlier. My new yorkie (5 months and being spayed tomorrow...agh!) came to me at 8 weeks, so not all that much older than yours is now. She had her first jab at 9 weeks and her next 2 weeks later then was allowed on the ground outside 2 weeks after that. But after her first jab I took her out and about in a carrier to socialise her and get her used to seeing all different things. They're fine as long as they are not allowed on the ground and not allowed in contact with unvaccinated dogs. So, as your dog is vaccinated they'll be fine together. Do you have a garden or yard? If so she can go out there providing it's a clean area. If you have concrete you can disinfect the area for her and let her go out there for toilet training. Rats can carry diseases as well, which is why you need to disinfect the area even though no unvaccinated dogs go there. What wet food is she having? I ask because at her age it's best to have food down for her all day which you can't really do with dry food. I have mine on James Wellbeloved Turkey and Rice Puppy, which is one of the best available in the UK. If you wanted to change, though, I'd do it over a couple of weeks as she's a tiddler. You are doing the right thing in keeping her. She's 7 weeks now so not far off the recommended age and you've had her vet checked and she's healthy. She's eating well, etc, so there are no probs with you keeping her. Just give her lots of love and keep a close eye on her.

But your focus now is your pup. I hope your older pup warms up to your new one soon. I bet you'll feel better once you have a happy little family again. My hope is that your older pup can be your little helper. When it comes to doggy manners, and bite inhibition, your older pup can be a big help. She can teach the little one using doggy language, the same way a mom could, and you could teach the little one too. Your little one will have two teachers. That's assuming your older pup will be a willing participant.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Sounds like you are doing a great job with her. As long as she is eating andyou watch for a low sugar attack she should be fine. I would have done the same thing she is better off with a responsible loving owner like you than with them. Besides they would have just sold her to someone else. Keep us posted and ask away any questions you have. She is so cute.
