| Pee Pad & Outside Training What are you thoughts/experiences with pee pad and outdoor potty training at the same time? Can you do both? Will they be able to transition to just outside if at a different home? I ask because Piper is pretty good about using the pee pad at my house (she will also go outside when we take her), but this past weekend we went to my parent's house and I think she forgot what a pee pad was.... Would it be better to just outside train and forget the pee pads so when we travel there won't be the confusion? I'm hesitant to get rid of the pee pad because 1. she already gets it here (and makes my life easier ) and 2. It gets cold in Wisconsin and when it is 0 degrees and we have 2 feet of snow, who wants to go outside? I know that the forgetting of the pee pad at my parents was probably because it was a new place and their layout is completely different than my place, but I want to be able to bring her places and not worry about peeing in someone's house. I feel that pee pad training, lets her think that it is "ok" to go in the house. Thanks in advance for the advice! |

| Hey I use pee pad and outside. My female hates to potty outside( she thinks she is a Princess) she uses the pads all the time, My 2 boys will do either one. They always use the pads. I never take them to other peoples houses so I never had a problem. he pads are nice if I am gone or it rains. Right now it is way too hot for them to go outside in the middle of the day.

| We use both - my dogs actually prefer to go outside, except when it rains or snows or is too cold and then they seem to run right back inside and go on their washable pee pads.

| We do both pads and outside and the boys don't have any problems discerning when and where is appropriate to potty. However, I will say they are never out of my sight when I take them to places other than my home. I don't know if supervision is the key. When Max was neutered, he refused to potty at the vet's office. He was desperate to get home to do it. Maybe he is that well trained. Also, when we stayed at a hotel, Max sniffed the wall where a dog had obviously marked. He lifted his leg, but he looked at me for approval before he did anything. I said, "no" and he put his leg down and went directly to his pad to pee. I checked the wall with my hand to make sure he had not done anything. At your parents house, make sure you take your pup outside often. Always praise for a good potty. Supervise closely for a few visits. |

| My girl won't go on the pee pad no matter what. She will hold it ...and hold it... and hold it...until I take her outside or when she decides to pee on the carpet. My boy does either...he was pee pad trained as a pup so he goes on command...but only on the pee pad. On the grass...he takes his sweet *** time ...I give him about 10 minutes and it's back inside the apartment until the next 30 minutes have passed and we try again. I think training on both is possible....since my boy does it fine. Oh and by the way, when we were at my parents' .....he totally pottied on their kitchen floor, on their bed....both my dogs were just horrible at my parents....so they slept in their kennels at night since I didn't want to leave a big mess in the guest room. | Bella was very hard to potty train. She would use pee pads but when it was #2 she would not know what to do. SHe peed in carpet, or any kind of fabric. It was a horrible!.. They i didnt had to do much and she started to go outside. I would sit there our and she would not go. Until she started to learn and liked it. It also had to be the horrible weather.. rain and cold in washington. Now she goes outside most of the time but i still put a pee pad when im not home so she can go. She does great now!! I think that being pee pad is great because they are very usefull when traveling! or being somewhere else. |

| When you crate them it teaches them to hold it right??? What about pad training? Do they have "bladder control" since a pad is always available to them? That is my main concern about taking her to other peoples houses. |

When Max was young, he thought he was only supposed to potty on the pad. He would go for hours without a potty break when I would take him places. Finally he learned that it was okay to go outside too. | |

| Bailey is trained to potty outside - however, I keep a pad down for when we're at work - she will use it only when we're gone. I try to get her to use the pee pad when its raining or real cold outside - but she refuses. As long as we're home, she'll hold it during bad weather - despite my desperate pleas.

| All of mine use the potty pads when we are gone and at night time if needed...when we are home the doggie door is open, the potty pad comes up and they go in and out freely to play or do their 'business' in the yard. We have not had any confusion with training issues...the only 'issue' we have is sometimes when we are gone the girls will use a rug instead of the washable potty pad because of the similar feel under their feet. I wish I would have stayed with disposable pads and the tray. |

| Kaji is both. He came to me outside potty trained and did really well that way. Our needs changed and I taught him to potty on a piddle pad. He is doing amazingly well. We only have one pad down for him in the bathroom and he goes to it all on his own. If given the choice between a piddle pad and outside, he prefers peeing on a tree paws down. When visiting, I take him out to the grass and ask him to potty before we go in. I don't usually carry pads with me. I have, however, used pads when we stay in a hotel. I'll put one down in the bathroom, show him where it is and ask him to potty. I praise if he does, and I hold him when he doesn't and try again in 20 mins. It's worked well for us.
