Kaji is both. He came to me outside potty trained and did really well that way. Our needs changed and I taught him to potty on a piddle pad. He is doing amazingly well. We only have one pad down for him in the bathroom and he goes to it all on his own. If given the choice between a piddle pad and outside, he prefers peeing on a tree paws down.
When visiting, I take him out to the grass and ask him to potty before we go in. I don't usually carry pads with me. I have, however, used pads when we stay in a hotel. I'll put one down in the bathroom, show him where it is and ask him to potty. I praise if he does, and I hold him when he doesn't and try again in 20 mins. It's worked well for us.
