Question about Exhibitor / Show Breeder litters

And whether right or wrong, I do prefer low volume breeders. After this thread, I feel like I should be apologetic for saying that or something. But I really do just feel more comfortable about it. It's just the way *I* feel.

Don't apologize for prefering a low volume breeder I prefer being a low volume breeder LOL...but in all seriousness, I know some that do produce at a higher volume and would purchase from them because they do it the right way and what's best for the breed and are producing healthy and good representations of the breed and are very well respected and very knowledgable

Why can't one attend dog shows? If you can go to the meet ups, playdates one can take the time to attend a dog show they are all over the country

Let me check if I'm absorbing it. So, a dog could potentially be shown even if they have a minor or major fault...depending upon the rest of their qualities. Also, a dog *might* be bred with a fault if a breeder is trying to correct/adjust their line, and the fault may help do this. (ie, a larger size may help bring up weights, if needed)

Donna, I appreciate what you're saying....and this is why I ask questions of all sorts of breeders (not just one type). YT is mostly about learning for me. Not everyone can attend dog shows. That's why it's beneficial and educational to try to learn here, if that's the extent of what one is able to do. I know I don't have to show to learn, that's why I'm asking questions.

Ann you have got the idea. But let me say categorically all dogs have faults even if only minor. You see the thing is, the standard is a lofty ideal for every breed, that we struggle to attain. It is like getting to the top of Mount Everest. With minor faults for certain you don't want to match minor to minor in all points to a breeding. But a major fault is much more of a concern in selecting a breeding mate.

And IMO most breeders don't show a dog with a Major Fault, unless his/her other attributes are excellent and above. I'll give you a for instance, not with the Yorkie breed, but my breed. It is a Major Fault for a dog to be above the height standard and a DQ to be below the height standard. But say for instance you have a dog which is 1/2" above height standard, but is excellent in every other way. Do you show this dog. Of course. There are simply too many excellent qualities to not show and championship this dog.
Now do you show your dog who is below the height standard? Umm no, because this is a DQ! Even if all else being great with this dog, sigh you don't have a show dog/bitch.

All just have to remember there is "NO" perfect dog in any breed. Every dog will have a fault no matter what. Do we wish they were prefect of course but even humans aren't perfect so we can't expect dogs to be perfect but we as in humans strive to be the best we can so when one shows and breeds our goal is to strive for the best. That's all one can do

Ann, Sometimes things seem contradictory because it's all complicated. With all the comments from everyone it can come together to make sense. This has been a very educational thread and Ann thank you for starting it! I'm learning more about the BRT's that Gail shows LOL...

So basically from reading this thread, It is ok for show breeders to breed 10 to 20 litters a year and keep them in Kennels because they want to get that perfect puppy?

Don't apologize!!! I, too perfer low volume breeders...but understand the high volume, top breeder and what their goals are...just not for me.

I think you missed the point...I know of no show breeder who breeds volumes to merely come up with "that one perfect pup"...

I really wasn't referring to "one puppy"
I was just asking If it is the general consensus that it is ok for show breeders to breed in volumes and keep their dogs in kennels?

A missing testicle is a DQ...biting a judge is a DQ also AND if a dog bites a judge it's a DQ for the rest of that dogs show career unless you want to appeal it and you can BUT the dog has to be gone back over by 3 judges. One of the judges has to be the same sex that the dog bit and then two other judges have to go over the dog to deem the dog non aggressive in the ring. I know a person that the yorkie bitch did bite the judge but the judge had pulled a hair that hurt the dog and the bitch snapped and my friend had to go through that process to be able to finish her.

In the case of a testicle, color ect...for a DQ, the dog has to be DQ'ed 3 times by different judges in order to be deemed permenatly out of the show ring.

I knew this would happen, 5 to 10 litters becomes 10-20. I think it's more important to ask, how long has this person studied the breed BEFORE they started breeding, and how many years have they been breeding before they start producing X amount of litters a year. Again, there is no such thing as a perfect dog, but good breeders are trying to produce more that meet standard, and are healthy as well.

I thought the testicle was a 3 time thing...but interesting as to biting...thanks
