| How much??? When I first took Paddington to the vet, he was 4 lbs, three months old. Last month, he was five months old and weighed 6 lbs. During the first visit, the vet told me to feed him 1/3 C food. Well since he is bigger, I have increased the amount of food, but I am wondering if now he gets too much??? He gets one 1/3 C scoop in the morning, and one 1/3 scoop in the evening. Sometimes he also gets a half of a small apple chopped up or a half a jar of baby food (not every night, just sometimes... maybe three times a week) is 2/3 C too much food for a 6 lb 5 month yorkie? I know dogs are different than cats, but my cats both ate a cup of dry food, plus half a can of wet food, and they were about the same size..... That is kind of what I was basing it on. Thanks for an advice! -O

| I think it all depends on the type of food.. the better the food, the less you feed. What type do you feed? It probably recommends how much do feed on the side of the bag. |

Milli weighs 4 lbs, and gets 1/4 cup of dry puppy food, plus 1/4 cup homecooked mixture, plus the extras that Emma gets (proportional, of course). I think 1/2 an apple of 1/2 jar of baby food might be too much extra of one thing at a time. Could upset his tummy and cause weight gain. Just my opinion though! As far as weight gain for puppies goes, Emma (now 16 months) gained a little at each vet check, with steady growth. Milli (now 8 months) gained NOTHING for the first 3-4 months we had her-she was 3 lbs. for what seemed like forever-in fact, she lost a few ounces here and there. She then started gaining again, and I think she's around 4.5 lbs. now.

| d'oh! I hadn't thought of that!!!! I feed him a brand that I can only find at PetSmart called Blue Buffalo, and sometimes he gets Eukanuba or Science Diet simply because I am trying to use them up. I'll go look on the bag right now; I dunno why I didn't think about it! That is what I call a DER moment! -O

The bag is little help. It says 1/3 C-1 1/4 C.... the high end seems like way too much but the low end seems like not enough... I guess 2/3 is okay then-right in the middle???? The apple was suggested to me by the vet (they aren't huge apples- actually rather small, and he LOVES them! I haven't seen any signs of an upset tummy!) and the baby food was started by my mom. I asked the vet and he said that as long as it wasn't a lot and it isn't more than one or two times a week, it would be okay. He gets about an oz or 1.5 oz. They are the small stage 1 jars. He also really loves this, just as much as his apples! All of this occurred in his first visit though, and I didn't ask him anything about diet during this past visit. -O -O

I think the apples are ok, but please remember to watch the apples-the seeds can be toxic to dogs, so as long as you're only feeding the fruit part, you're ok. Also, grapes, raisins, onions, avocados, and garlic can be toxic to dogs, as well as pits in fruit like plums, peaches, and apricots. I urge you to log on to BB's website: bluebuff.com. They will send you free samples and coupons off your next bag of food. You may as well-it will save you $, and then you won't feel as bad about not using up the rest of the food. Another BB tip: the Lamb and Rice Puppy is lower in fat than the Chicken and Rice Puppy, while the Chicken and Rice Adult is the lowest fat content of the 3 formulas available at my PetSmart.

| I understand the "thrifty" bit...I recently changed Emmy and Oscar to Canidae, but still had about 1/4 of a small bag Royal Canin Yorkie food and a little Science Diet puppy food. I dumped them all together and shook up the canister. The furbabies like it and I feel better about trying to use up the other food. When they finish the entire canister off, then I will refill it with just Canidae. Emmy and Oscar probably each eat about 1/4-1/2 cup dry food a day (that is the total amount). I really don't measure...just eyeball it! Their food bowls stay down all day (free feed). I fill the bowls in the morning and they eat when they want. By dinner time (around 6:00) the bowls are empty and I give them the rest of their kibble, just because they like to eat dinner when we eat, but this is still counted in their total amount for the day. They do get small "snacks" during the day--probably more than they need--depending on what we have--bits of cheese (their fav), cheerios, tiny amounts of fruit, plain yogurt, etc. I use dry kibble for training treats--training as in sit, stay, down, up, crawl, etc. Now for potty treats, I do try to give them something they love--a bit of a soft treat that I buy at the vets. Hope this helps! Good luck!

I chop the apples up into little bits, and remove the skin and the seeds. Sometimes he gets the hole half (strange expression) and sometimes he only eats part of it. We "share" the apple- I eat mine sliced with PB, and he gets his chopped up, little bits at a time. A half is the most he gets though. Quote:

I really can't afford to throw kibble away.... sometimes it comes down to gas or groceries for myself, and dog food is SO expensive! -O
