Question 5 week old pup!!

We are getting a 5 week old Yorkie/Long Haired Chihuahua in the morning. Now before anyone spazes I have my concerns because she is so small. The mom won't nurse them anymore. They said something about the mother being drained of her calcium and not being able to feed them. She had 3 pups. This is also her second litter of pups so I have no idea if this is the real reason she isn't nursing them. Anyway that being said I know that the puppy still needs milk. I have some puppy milk waiting on her. My question is what else does she need at this age. They are feeding her soft puppy food and she is drinking water. I just can't imagine that is very good for since she is so young. I would love to hear any advice that you all may have. We also have a baby playpen waiting on her as well. She is way to little to run around by herself. My MIL said she is so little that you can put her in a quart jar . That part really scares me. For the life of me I just can't imagine why the people who had the pups didn't give them any puppy milk. I just didn't have the heart to turn her down. My daughter has been asking for a LH Chihuahua for a long time now. This one just kinda fell in our laps and she was FREE. Oh also if she is on puppy milk what about any extra vitamins??

Nursing is not the only reason pups stay with the mom! I'm surprised they would still let her go so early. I don't have any advice, but you seem real concerned, so I'm glad she's going to a good home with someone who does care about her proper raising. Good luck!

I am really hoping that Diesel becomes a surragate "dad" so to speak. He is 5 pounds and her mom was a small Yorkie so I have been told. My MIL filled a water bottle with warm water for her. She put a blanket over it and she climbed on it and went to sleep.

I am very shocked as well. My inlaws just happen to meet them. They were at my BIL's house for a cookout. They lady said they were giving them away. I tried to tell my MIL that by Virginia law they aren't suppose to be letting them go any earlier than 7 weeks. Diesel was 9 weeks when I bought him. He did just fine. I just can't imagine letting them go any sooner. Sooo... I will post pictures when she gets here.

By five weeks, she may be already weaned off of the milk and able to eat puppy food or puppy mush. Some breeders have them completely weaned off of milk by 6 weeks even though they still keep the pups longer. It sounds like the mother dog could have eclampsia (sp?). This is a calcium defiency and by letting the pups to continue to nurse off the mom could cause the mom to die, her body can't handle it. Actually there is a thread on someone who is going through this. Here is the thread... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56197

I would have some nutrical handy and make sure the puppy is eating plenty and limit her playtime or exercise. Also make sure the puppy stays warm and does not get chilled. Good luck with your puppy, she sounds cute!!!

They were trying to get rid of the pups for whatever reason. I wish they had stayed with the mom longer. If I hadn't taken her someone else was. My daughter has been asking for a chihuahua for a LONG time so I jsut couldn't say no. The couple that had the mom, dad, and the pups were just in town visiting family and looking for new homes for them. Here are some pics of Keira. I don't see a lot or Yorkie in her yet. Her mom was a Yorkie and her dad was a long haired Chihuahua. She is still little so we will see. She is such a cute little thing. Hard not to fall for her.

i am no expert but my muffie stopped nursing at 4 weeks and i was feeding the puppies soft puppy food. i went to the vet and she stated they were so healthy, she felt they could go at 7 weeks (of course i would not do this). i asked her why she felt they could leave and not stay for the 12 weeks. the vet said if they are healthy and eating on their own, it is good to get them to their new homes asap so the new parents can train them to what fits for them. a puppy learns quickly and becomes familiar with certain habits early, before 12 weeks, and is very hard to change when they go to the new home.

i found this very interesting.
what do you think?

I have no clue about one that young, but she is absolutely adorable! What will your daughter name her? I know she will be quite a challenge but she will no doubt be the most spoiled baby on the planet! Tell your daughter congratulations and please keep us updated on how she is doing!

I take a quality dry puppy food (no corn, no meat by -products) and put it into a food processor and turn it into a powder. I do a big batch all at once. I then take the dry, mix in a little quality puppy can, and hot water, instead of water you could use puppy milk replacer and serve warm four or five times a day. Put enough liquid to make a soupy gruel, more that she can lap us than chew. She is probably fine without a bottle, if she is eating the meals you are feeding. Get a kitchen scale and keep a close eye on her weight. If she is losing weight than you need to find out why.

Use a heating pad on low underneath a towel to keep her warm.

Oh man.. The first night was rough! LOL I know she was up about every 3 hours. I just gave her some warm puppy milk and water and that seemed to do the trick. Last night I went and bought her ultra nutro chicken, rice and oatmeal hard puppy food. Last night that is what we gave her soften with warm water. She couldn't get enough of it.

I really like the idea of putting it all in the blender and mixing it later with water. I hadn't really thought of that.

I think she is spoiled already. She loves being held when it is time to sleep. Needless to say my daughter loves that. It was so funny. This morning my daughter came and woke me up about 5:30. She had been up with the puppy for a good 20 min. She said momma... I can't get the puppy to go back to sleep. LOL It was so funny. So we gave her some milk and water(I dilute it some) and she peed and pooped and went sound to sleep.

Is this normal for a puppy to wwant to eat that often? I swear I still think she is a tad bit younger. Some of her teeth are just now coming in. I just can't imagine why on earth someone could get rid of the pups so early.

Oh by the way her name is is Keira. The story behind that... When the chronicles of riddick came out was the same time we went and got Diesel. Well Riddick just didn't seem to fit but the actors last name did. (Vin Diesel) SOOO... LOL In the movie he is trying to get to a girl named jack. He finds her and she tells him her name is now Keira. LOL So we thought it was cute and fit her. LOL Sounds corny I know LOL

Anyway thanks a bunch for the help.

You're not giving her cow's milk are you? Only goat's milk or puppy milk replacer or evaporated milk diluted 50% with water. Pulverizing the dry food makes mixing so much faster and easier, especially when you are going to be doing it a lot.

I wouldn't ever recommend one being so young leaving her Mom, but in this case I would much rather her be with you. It's going to be time consuming, but just like with our human children it will go too fast, so enjoy it and keep us posted so we can be included in your joy.

My thoughts on how soon puppies should go home. My Yorkie puppies are usually about 4 pounds at maturity. When I was letting them go home earlier at 9 weeks. I had many owners with vet bills, due to hypoglycemic episodes or just bouts of diarrhea from the stress or just the puppy crying at night time. Once I started letting them go home at 11 and 12 weeks I have not had one that even had soft stools and those that kennel at night report that they cry for less than a minute before settling in.

Oh no I am using puppy milk replacer. I was just diluting that a little incase it was too rich. I did what you suggested with the hard food and man it works really well. I mixed it with the milk this time and man she went nuts.So far so good. I also let her lick just a TAD bit of light karo syrup off of our fingers. I forgot to get Nutrical. She was actually really wobbly when we got her yesterday. Today tho she seems to be doing a lot better. Not sure if it was the food the milk or the karo that helped. She perked up today and started barking a bit and playing. SHHH don't say anything but I think she has stolen my husband's heart. LOL Every time I turn around he is holding her!
