Gurgling Noises & Mucus Poop! TJ is going back to the Vet tonight. For the past 3 weeks it has been about every 3 to 4 days, he has that gurgling noises and then mucus poop. I have really tried to puppy proof, and I have cut back on the treats and anything that I think would bother him, but he just has such a sensitive tummy (I guess) and I am lossing my mind now! He'll eat anything he can find! And it only takes a minute! I have NO CLUE what is bothering him. Either it is something around the house, the poop that I can't get him to stop eating, or a food allergy! He eats Innova Puppy Dry (in the AM I sprinkle the tiniest bit of boiled chicken that I mush and crumble with my fingers, the breeder fed them Eukanuba Dry and then would give them Chicken 2x a day). I stopped giving him the pea sized nutrical and he gets 1 or 2 Old Mother Hubbard Puppy Biscuits a day. Saturday at 3 am he woke me up and that gurgling noise was the loudest I have ever heard it. He pooped 2x, very soft and the noises continued until 8:30 am when he pooped 4 more times, but it was yellow and mucus. Once that happens, he is all better! Ready to eat and play! This has happened since the first week of getting him (but only a couple of times and there was evidence around house that he was getting into something, like the walls, and moulding and the wooden baby gate), then there was a good month of nothing, he had good poop, sometimes soft, but no mucus or noises, but like I said, the past 3 weeks has been like every 3-4 days. And he also threw up 2x later in the morning on Sunday (But I think it was from the Deter I gave him)... BASICLY, I don't know what is going on with him and I really hope the Vet can help! Has anyone else expereinced anything similar? TJ will be 7 months on the 31st. He is approx. 4 lbs and other than these episodes he is great and seems perfectly normal. (even during these episodes he seems fine, except that he will not eat until that finally mucus poop comes out)

Since he is eating things he shouldn't be eating, I would suggest getting a plastic x-pen to confine him. Put him in an area w/tile or linoleum so that he can't soil or eat the carpet. That way you can truly keep an eye on everything he eats. Try pineapple in his food. SOmetimes that will deter them from eating their own poop. Are his 'gurgly sounds' gassy sounds? Is there blood in his poo? I would stop the Innova for awhile and feed him a boiled chicken/rice diet. Feed it for several days and see if his tummy settles down. Do you have a vet appt? Keep us posted as to his diagnosis and progress.

Since TJ seems to have a very sensitive stomach I agreed is best to keep him confine in a area were you can keep constant watch of what he is getting into. You can feed TJ rice and boiled chicken until his stomach feels better then resume the innova slowly. I hope the vet has a solution for your problem. You should take a poo sample to be check out. Please keep us posted how TJ is doing.

Yes, I have Vet appt. tonight and hopefully I will be able to get a stool sample from TJ to bring. I think the Vet may recommend that I put Roxy and TJ on a special diet b/c maybe it is his food or treats that he is allergic to. I am not quite sure what exactly are the gurgling noises. I know it is coming from his digestive area. Maybe they are gas noises (he doesn't fart during this time). There is a tiny bit of thread like blood in the last bit of this mucus poop, but I think it is from straining... I just have NO IDEA! I am at a toss up between he is getting into something around the house b/c in the beginning the few times it happened, he was still eating the Eukanuba (from the breeder, which he had no problems with) and there was evidence that he was eating the wall, moulding, etc...And then the next thing is maybe the Innova is too Rich for him? Or the treats are not agreeing with him either, maybe too much protein! I DON"T KNOW...I let ya know what the Vet thinks tonight... P.S. As far as the poop eating, I have tried: Forbid, Pineapples, Accent and now Deter!

I delayed the Vet appt. b/w when I got home lastnight TJ was really fine! I sat and watched him for an hour and decided that for the next week I am going to keep him on a short lease on him and I am only going to feed him the Innova puppy dry all day like I have been, I am going to slowing lessen the tiny bit of chiken in the morning, and only 1 Old Mother Hubbard Puppy Buscuit before I leave in the AM and maybe 1 more at night. No Missing Link. No Nutrical. No Nutri Dent. Nothing Else! - EXCEPT I am going to contine with the Deter! It's my last hope at stoping the Poop eating. Already this morning things were better! TJ pooped this morning and it was NORMAL, log like and kinda hard. I was so proud and happy! And not to be gross, but it smelled like the Deter might work! (TJ's poop normally has a strong protein smell, but this morning it smelled like gross poop, so I have my fingers crossed that the Deter might actually work!) So, anyway, Thanks for all your support. I will keep you posted at the end of the week!

This sounds like a classic case of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and that is something you don't want to mess with. You should take him to the vet with the history of his troubles written out. I'm sure the vet will recommend he be on and I/D formula dog food and absolutely nothing else, no treats, no nutrical, no chicken, no biscuits. He should stay on that restricted diet for at least a month then you can try to reintroduce biscuits slowly. Try to find the highest quality biscuit available in your area. I see many on the list feed their dogs chicken on top of their dog food. I don't know where that notion came from but adding extra protein to a well balanced dog food just doesn't make any sense especially in yorkies who tend to have digestive problems and liver problems. They do not need extra protein unless prescribed by a vet.

I've often wondered that myself. My dogs rarely get anything except their dog food. My sister & my aunt feed theirs off the table as well as dog food, which I definately don't agree with. Just my opinion

I've fed mine chicken, but only when their tummies were upset and the vet had them on a chicken/rice only diet. I was suggesting that the OP do the same - I wasn't suggesting that chicken be added in addition to the dog food. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

I am try to slowly faze out the chicken. I only continued it b/c the breeder gave it to them. I have already spoken to the Vet about Irritable Bowel Syndrome, he feels that TJ is too young to be expereincing IBS. He feel that he is either digesting something around the house that he shouldn't be (including poop) OR he is allergic to something in his food. My plan is to give this my 100% attention. For the next week, I am keeping him under my close eye. I will be able to control him NOT getting into things around the house. The poop I hope the Deter will control that (b/c while I am at work, I can not control him eating it, so again, HOPEFULLY the Deter will help that). And I can control his Food Intake. He will only be getting the Innova Puppy Dry, I am fazing out the chicken, and he will only get 1 Old Mother Hubbard Puppy Buscuit in the AM before I leave and Maybe ? 1 more at night (but probably not :-) So, that is my plan, and I will continue like this until I know it is safe to introduce any other healthy treats down the road, if I even need to. (Although, they do love the Nutri Dent, so later in time, I hope I can give it to them...) And IF and WHEN this gurgling/mucus poop episode ever happens again, I WILL BE AT THE VET IMMEDIATELY!!! And at that point he will suggest that I put Roxy and TJ on a strict diet, one of Venison, something without chicken or beef which could cause an allergic reaction in the tummy and digestion. I will definatley keep you posted, please keep your fingers crossed for me!

UPDATE!!! I have gone to the Vet w/Roxy and TJ. Both are healthy and growing little pigglets he-he-he. TJ is now 3.9 lbs and Roxy is 3.7 lbs - little piggies!!!! (just kiddin') Anyway, TJ is eating things he shouldn't and so is Roxy (I came home on Wed. to 2 shredded wee wee pads) - They are OK :-) We also think maybe he is sensitive to certain foods too! So, I am going to put TJ and Roxy on the Innovative Vet Diet (IVD) - I got Duck and Potato Dry food to start with. Hopefully, they will like this flavor and hopefully this stops the problems that TJ has with IBD. I will keep you posted! THANKS EVERYONE!

www.doghealth.co.uk Go to www.doghealth.co.uk theres a marvellous homeopahtic drink for dogs called Moor Gold and a powder called Protect, that contains live bacteria. You give it daily and it saved my yorkie from Colitis. He was passing mucus in his stools and the vet wanted to cut him open for exploratory surgery but I said no and went on the web. He started taking Moor Gold May 2004 and hasn't had a bout of collitis since. You could see a difference in him in one week it's so good. He still takes it,so go take a look at the website. It's safe for puppies and older dogs too and the customer care is second to none, you can ask questions and they are happy to help. They also sell other great homeopathic treatments for dogs which I have used and wouldn't be without for my yorkie. Hope this helps all the best Lisa

Sorry to hear about his problem. I would suggest that you just take a poop sample in to your vet for check. Then, you can still spend the money for a vet visit. I don't mean to say you don't have money, it is just that you do not need to expose him to the sickies in a vet's office unless absolutely necessary. Also, do not use dairy products, like Yogurt or cottage cheese. Lactose intolerance can sound as you have described. BeneBac or acidophilus powder can be of help sometimes. But, again an herb is still a medicine and your vet should sign off on it/them. IBS and grain sensitivities are similar in symptoms. Maybe, duck and potato food would be a possibility.. As I said, let your vet make the final decisions on his treatment. Good Luck!!!!
