| Tooth Extraction and No Pain Meds?! My little 2 year old, 4 lb yorkie just had his double teeth extracted yesterday and the vet did not prescribe any pain meds. I know dogs have a high threshold for pain but when I got my wisdom teeth removed it hurt like hell and I was down for the count for about a good week. Is this some kind of a barbaric practice to let the little guy suffer after a surgery like this? I'm extremely concerned. My bf says to wait and see if he is telling us that he is in pain. Well I'm sorry but I don't want him to GET to that point. That's the whole point of pain meds! So he DOESN'T have to feel such discomfort. I've read metacam is a good med for this kind of surgery but obviously I'm not just going to administer anything without a vet double checking. But then again, the vet was the one who didn't give me any drugs for my dog kid.... Any thoughts on this? I just don't want my little guy suffering. Breaks my heart. =( |

| If you feel he is in pain I would call your vet and tell him to give you an Rx. Plus it is always good to have some at you house for future use!!

| Just call your vet and insist on something for your dog. Tooth extraction isn't always that terribly painful with humans because we have Novacaine, etc., injected into our gums and it takes a good while to wear off but dogs don't get that and just wake up hurting. My wisdom teeth extractions hurt, too, but another one or two didn't hurt that much, to tell the truth. But I was pumped full of Novacaine and by the time it wore off, I'd used ice and had strong pain medication on board and pretty much stayed inactive. Dogs can be running around in a few hours. Just call the vet and insist.

| If it's baby teeth that are being removed, a pain killer isn't necessarily needed--they are usually loose and pull out easily. In humans, wisdom teeth are different because they are permanent teeth firmly rooted in the jaw. I'm not defending the vet's action, I'm just trying to give a possible explanation. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I always make sure I go home with pain meds after any intervention such as this. And, I always ask "what should I do after hours if the pain is not controlled?" - bc they may tell you to give a larger dose if that happens.

| Was it baby teeth or adult teeth? Baby teeth don't have the same kind of roots as adult teeth. If it was adult teeth I would just call the vets office and tell them your worries. When Callie had a tooth removed she got pain meds and when my moms yorkie had a few teeth removed he got pain meds too.

Whether it killed that lady or not, the bottom line there was a question about it, therefore I say no...for myself and certainly for my pups. For years I have given Metacam, Rimadyl, Tramadol and Bupranex to my pups after surgical procedures and had no problems with these meds whatsoever.
