Default Tooth Extraction and No Pain Meds?!

My little 2 year old, 4 lb yorkie just had his double teeth extracted yesterday and the vet did not prescribe any pain meds.

I know dogs have a high threshold for pain but when I got my wisdom teeth removed it hurt like hell and I was down for the count for about a good week.

Is this some kind of a barbaric practice to let the little guy suffer after a surgery like this? I'm extremely concerned. My bf says to wait and see if he is telling us that he is in pain. Well I'm sorry but I don't want him to GET to that point. That's the whole point of pain meds! So he DOESN'T have to feel such discomfort.

I've read metacam is a good med for this kind of surgery but obviously I'm not just going to administer anything without a vet double checking. But then again, the vet was the one who didn't give me any drugs for my dog kid.... Any thoughts on this? I just don't want my little guy suffering. Breaks my heart. =(
