watery runny eyes I was wondering if there was anything I could do or purchase that prevents my little Misti's eyes from watering. Poor girl gets big eye goobies and It grosses me out but I know she can't help it. Is this a normal health issue among Yorkie's? I am loving everyone's pictures that are posted. Yorkie's are the most adorable dogs!!!

watery runny eyes I have the same problem with my middle yorkie, Baby Tango. I have to wash the eye area every two or three days. I have tried different commerical products but they haven't worked. I suggest you speak with your vet. I was told it has to do with the tear ducts but I would not subject Tango to an operation. Please let me know if anyone has a solution to watery eyes. Meanwhile, I just take a washcloth and wet it with warm water numerous times until the crust gets soft and comes off on the wash cloth.

Lil Bit had the same problem.....also a bit of runny nose....vet didn't seem too concerned. But a few days later her little face was soooo stinky!!!!! I washed and washed...finally took her back to the vet. He said the foul odor was infection. put her on some antibiotics and eye ointment for about 10 days...doing much better now. Still 'some' runny eyes but nothing like it was. P.S. I trimmed most of the hair from around her eyes......makes clean-up easier for me!

I was recomended by my breeder to clean Mojo's eyes at least every other day. If you yorkie needs to be cleaned more than once a day, he might have a problem and i would check with the vet.

Joey's eyes are alwasy watery too. Especilaly when he gets hyper 90% of the time. The discharge doesn't smell and its not gooppy, his fur is just always damp around his eyes. The Vet said you can get his tear ducts made smaller but I won't put Joey threw that. I'll wait till the summer. It could just be the cold air.

Otis had the same problem. The vet put some glow-in-the-dark eye drops in his eyes to see if it was draining to his nose, the way it's supposed to be. When we turned out the lights, his nose stayed the same color so we knew his tears weren't draining and his ducts were clogged. The vet also told me they could open the holes so this doesn't happen anymore, but Otis would have to be knocked out and it wouldn't guarantee they would drain. I opted for no, and just do the cleaning myself.

Very often these Yorkies have problems with the naso-lacrimal ducts. The solution is simple if they are only clogged from birth or acquired. When the vet is doing the dentals and altering at 6 months or so, they can flush the ducts. I have it done as a part of my first dentals. If the ducts cannot be flushed thru because they do not actually connect, then you have to make peace with the fact you are gonna do a lot of cleaning..A PA couple told me they call them "eye Schmutz" and I liked that better than the term "eye boogers" which I was using. Another calls them "eye goobers" LOL You can use the saline solution used for lenses or make your own with boiled water and salt. Keep refrigerated. Then every day warm a bit of it and cleanse the face with cotton balls and the saline. Make sure to dry the solution from the fur. Smelly stuff is almost always infectious and needs to be handled by the vet..

| I use a small flea comb to pull the eye goobers from around his eyes. Of course, I wet the area first so that it makes it easier to slide through. Works wonderfully. I do this for dogs that come into my groom shop as well. Hope that helps!

I use those little eyebrow combs that you get free with cosmetics purchases to comb the schmutzes out. I also soak the dried areas with saline before combing them. I prefer the eyebrow comb cause there is less chance of poking an eye with them. I usually give one to the buyer in the puppy care package..

All of you sound so professional and knowledgable and you make it sound so easy. How in the world do you make the little ones be still long enough to clean their ears and eyes? I tried to do Beau's ears the other day, he fought me until I gave up.

Thank you, I never thought of that. I'm going to try that, I'm sure his little paws will be fighting me but at least his head won't be moving much.

I hope the holding-the-beard idea works for us. Looking down at him while he's on my lap is awkward. My Hawaii-born hubby has always referred to eye goobers as "mako pao pao", heh.

Yup, flea combs work for us, we clean him at least once a day, sometimes twice (morning and before sleepytime). Yoda gets gunk in the corners of his eyes and the area around his eyes are wet. As for how to clean him, basically we used to have one person hold him and one person use the comb, but after many, many, many times of doing it, he did finally get used to it and let us clean it for him. And it's so cute too, cuz he knows when we're working on the eye to close that particular eye. So Yoda knows how to wink!
