| Spay/Neutering?? I have a 6 month old Yorkie, I know I should get her spayed, but I am so scared! Its more expensive at the vet and I heard that the Humane society do a equally good job, but at a lower price, plus they are more experienced. So I am planning on taking her there, but I am just so scared, she's so small and I am so scared for her! I know its not a big deal like what vets say, but it is to me. I asked the Humane Society if usually small dogs get infections after getting spayed/neutered and they said "every dog has his or her own risks"... That makes me feel even more uneasy. For all of you who had your little yorkies spayed/neutered, did your little dog get any infections or anything?? At what age did you get them fixed? When do Yorkies get their periods anyway? Thanks~ |

| I understand completely your fear. It's something we all deal with no matter what size our little one's are. What you need to do is set aside your fear and think of the well-being of your little yorkie. How much does she weigh? Vainchick has a 2 pounder and she did fine when she was spayed. Mine was spayed on October 21st and it was a day surgery. I took her in that morning and brought her home in the evening. She had internal stitches. No need for removal later...They are tougher than we are. That's why I say it's harder on us than it is on them. I wouldn't be afraid of the humane society at all. These people are vet's. They are experienced and do a great job. Marie took her little one to a mobile van and hers came out fine, too. If you have any questions, I'll try my best to answer them for you. As far as the risk of infection, that is just that...a risk of any surgery, but I have never known of any to ever have one.

| I just remembered that you asked when she might go into heat and the answer to that is any time. It's hard to say exactly when they'll go into heat. Some start earlier than others. It is good to have them spayed before their first heat because it cuts the risk of cancer in later life by 8% or more.

| Hi, thanks for your reply =) I feel a little better about this now. My yorkie is 4 lbs. The Humane Society says I have to leave her with them overnight, so that adds more stress.. =( I wonder why when you take your dog to the vet, you can pick them up on the same day, but with the Humane Society, you have to leave them there overnight? |

| Actually, I would say that unless someone is very experienced with little doggies that they are better off staying with them overnight. They will be there with her and if she has any problems, then they know what to look for. It's really for the best unless you have experience.

| Catrina, I don't know what the price difference is between your vet and the Humane Society but I would go with an experienced toy dog vet. You have to be concerned that they are using the right anesthesia (Isoflorine) and are very carefully monitoring your dog. Someone's friend on YT lost their Yorkie last week because IMO they were not paying attention to the dog (2 hours under anesthesia). The Humane Society is setup to do large amounts of spay/neuter at one time and might not be paying enough attention. The only reason they are keeping your dog overnight is because of their schedule and not for the good of the dog. You will probably be told not to feed after 6:00 PM the night before and no water after midnight. This means your little one could go a whole day with no food or water. The other reason you don't want to go with the Humane Society if you can help it is, due to the large amount of diseased animals that they take in. Remember in many cases this is where people take their throw away animals so in alot of cases they have not taken care of their animals. The last reason is because your little one will be frightened in a place with all the noise of the other animals. I am not putting the Humane Society down because they do great work but if you have a choice I will go with an experienced toy dog vet. Now that I have probably scared you too much, let me tell you I have been in the surgery room for at least 15 Yorkie's that came through our rescue. The surgery probably only took 30 minutes for a neuter, longer for a spay (wasn't really watching the clock because it was interesting to watch) and within minutes of the vet turning off the anesthesia and giving them oxygen the dogs started coming out of the anesthesia. I was always allowed to hold my babies but usually a vet tec will do this until they have fought through the fog of the anesthesia and then all the little ones want to do is go back to sleep. I was allowed to bring mine home but most vets if they do the surgery sometime in the morning will let you pick up your baby by 5/5:30pm. There is very little pain and in many cases by evening they will want a little food and water. By the next morning they are almost back to normal and you just don't want them jumping off of anything or licking their incision. The vet may put a collar on them so they don't lick or you can buy a baby tee shirt and put it on them. I also think your little one would feel more secure and safe if it was at its own home. Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions or concerns.

| My yorkie was spayed. My yorkie was just spayed on yesterday. Her name is CoCo and she is 3.6 pounds, she will be 6 months on December 1st. I was so devastated. I cried all day. I dropped her off at 8:00 am and they told me to pick her up at 6:00 pm. She looked so sad when I picked her up. Today she looks a little happier but it's hard. The vet told me not to let her lick or bite the scar because that's how they get infections. He also said not to let her run or play for the next 10 days. It's hard because for 10 days I have to keep my eyes on her at all times. Does anyone know any easier ways to get through the next 10 days, she was trying to lick the scar already? I don't know if I regret it yet, I'll keep you posted. |

| I just called my Vet, there is about a $100 difference between the Humane Society and my Vet. So, I am still trying to decide between the two. |

My vet actually keeps them for two nights after being spayed/neutered. (If you drop her off on Monday, you'd pick her up Wednesday afternoon/night). I like it because if there were going to be any problems, I would think they'd show up in that time. The vet may be able to spot some kind of complication that my untrained eye might not see. They did with my cats as well. None of them had any kind of problems... I trust my vet 100% and won't worry all that much when Pixie gets spayed (well.... I'll still worry, just not excessivly!)

| While everyone is on the subject of spaying. We had our lil girl spayed in Sept. She has gained about 1 pound since the surgery. I don't know the weight gain exactley but I have noticed that she is like a lil butterball now. I'm just assuming this is normal. She is 6 years old and weighed 3.4 pounds when I took her in. |

That happened to my female cat... She went in around 8 pounds, now she's 10. She hasn't gotten lazier, she isn't getting more food. Just gained weight right after she was spayed... Anybody know what causes that??
