My vet actually keeps them for two nights after being spayed/neutered. (If you drop her off on Monday, you'd pick her up Wednesday afternoon/night).
I like it because if there were going to be any problems, I would think they'd show up in that time. The vet may be able to spot some kind of complication that my untrained eye might not see.
They did with my cats as well. None of them had any kind of problems... I trust my vet 100% and won't worry all that much when Pixie gets spayed (well.... I'll still worry, just not excessivly!)
