Annual Vaccinactions - why are some still doing them?

it is a vaccine supposedly to help dogs avoid periodontal disease but it has not been around long and it has alot of adverse side effects per a dentist i consulted with and vet techs on my dog groups

As EllieMay said, that does not necessarily make them bad vets. I use a lot more than their feelings about vaccines in my judging how I feel about them as vets. The very most important thing to me is their ability to DIAGNOSE....and part of being able to diagnose is their ability to LISTEN to a pet owner about what is happening to the pup. Being a good diagnostician is key in my book.

but i do also want to feel like we are on the same page and like i posted below the dentist wanted to give my dog a dental vaccine and i did not feel comfortable with that nor her recommendation on dental procedure so found another dentist that i was on the same page with

You said it! Thanks for all the help and advice, I really appreciate it and my babies will definitely appreciate it. And I will NOT be getting that dental vac. Now I am going to go back to page 6 and watch the videos.

Oh Heavens NO don't get that dental vaccine. Yikes...I did not see that. I had not heard of it and one day saw it on here...called my vet and she said NO way does she recommend them.

I think I will call and ask some questions before I totally give up on them. One of the vets did tell me that they have seen increasing cases of (I think it was lepto) because of a large population of wild animals leaving droppings and the dogs getting into it. I may not be remembering this 100% but I think this is what they said. Does this sound right? I know Daisy does snack on rabbit poop sometimes and I was afraid she would get sick if she didn't get the shot.

Anyway there is an awesome vet there named Dr. Stroud. She performed a miracle surgery when she saved my friend's Yorkie who was viciously attacked by a rottie. No one thought he had a chance of making it. I trust her to give me good info and I think I will ask her some questions. If I don't get good answers from her I will probably look for a new vet.

others may be able to give you good info on this as i do not do lepto but i believe lepto is from standing water

distemper can be from wild animals like racoons i believe - only know that as vet had this up at his office with a racoon pic lolll

rabbit poop they can get giardia from - did your vet give your dog the giardia vaccine ???????

Yes, the US is having a lepto problem right now. If it is needed in your case (one of those things I won't have an opinion on), then it can be given as a single instead of part of a combo. Lepto has to be given at least once yearly for protection and it does not protect against all strains.

I believe (besides standing water) that it is transferred by rodent urine

yes i think you are right on the rodent urine as that sounds like what i have heard too

yeah i agree with C on this as some areas have bad lepto issues but it does not cover all strains so i personally would not do it in my dogs but you have to discuss it with your vet and maybe a few vets in area as some say we need it here and some say we do not need it here. I choose not to do it

Is there a website showing areas at high risk for lepto like there is for heartworm?

I think someone posted below you can ask your vet for a print out of lepto issues in your area so check the thread for that as i thought i saw it here

no they didn't get the giardia vaccine but they get their stools checked with their shots yearly. Once one of them had some parasites (I think that is what they said) and they both got treated with meds.
