Default I need help is Roxy to fat :-(

I have a little bit of a problem.... I feed Roxy Eukanuba (however u spell)
The yorkie brand heard it was good for hair and all that good stuff.... However I think I been over feeding her... This is my routine. I feed her at 6am every morning the dry food and then at 6pm feeding I mix dry with wet food.... Should I not be doing this. Is dry food really just enough for the doggies.. This is my first dog and I've had her a year but a friend of mine told me that he thinks she is getting to fat. I tried to cover up and say its winter weight but I don't know.

Also I want to add, up until about 3 weeks ago she was crated ALL day so she would eat, poop and crate no room to really play or jump and stuff. Now she has roam of living room. So I thought maybe it was because she was sleeping so much that she gained weight...
I took her to vet about 3 weeks ago and she is 8.9lbs is only 16 months old (1year 4 months)

Should I take away her soft food and just give her the dry food?

I live alone and its a little hard to buy expensive food but to be honest every 2 months I spend about 30 bucks on soft food one package of beneful soft food lasts her about 4-5 days..... Ugh!!! And then at that point I buy her treats n hard food so every 2 months I'm spending about 80 bucks on her food

OR could it be the fact that its beneful soft food is that bad for her?

Please help I don't want my baby to be chunky.. She already plays for like 10mins and is out of breath feels like when I walk up 3 flights of stairs

Well, the beneful isn't really good . . .but dogs love it because it's more like "junk food" like we (people) love. Yorkies come in all shapes and sizes and it's hard to determine whether your baby is overweight. Does the vet think she is?

I have two babies. Brody is a fine boned petite little boy and weighs 5 1/2 pounds, but yet, he feels as light as a feather. Rhianna is a thicker, more solid baby and she weighs 6 1/2 pounds but she feels like she weighs around 10 pounds.

I feed Wellness and I leave their food out all day long to free feed. In the morning I do add some broiled chicken or turkey breast though. So I know they eat. Rhianna is my finish the bowl before bed baby.

The vet didn't really say anything about her weight but when I lift her she feels like she weighs about 15lbs LOL!!! I was told that they are at a okay when when you can feel their ribs just a little.. You have to really jab your finger to feel Roxy ribs...

I wouldn't mind given her boiled chicken BUT she gets to accustomed and eats around n leaves her dry food....

Well, IMO, both Beneful and Eukanuba are terrible foods, and a lot of dogs get fat eating those diets. They're full of junk, fillers and by-products. Also, I really don't believe a dog should be crated all day, and only allowed 10 minutes of exercise? Roam of the living room is not "exercise". 1 walk a day is very important for any dog, I believe, whether it be a 10 minute walk or a 1 hour walk. Dogs need to get out of the house as much as humans do... can you imagine just sitting in a cage all day, totally bored? Besides the physical problems, lack of exercise can cause an unstable mentality as well. Jackson gets at least 1 visit to the dog park a week, I try to walk him at least once a day, we do about 10 minutes of frisbee or ball chase outside a day (weather permitting) and we also do about 10-15 minutes of trick training a day... I understand not everybody can do all this, but a 10 minute walk around the block, or a 10 minute game of fetch doesn't take up much time. I dunno, it just saddens me to see doggies who are stuck in their crates all day. Why get a dog?

But back to food, Jackson is 16lbs and gets approx. 1 cup of food a day but usually it's less. I mix in some wet food with his dry food for his dinner and he's at a perfect weight.

IMO? No idea what that means...

I appreciate your post but like I said it was up to 3 weeks ago. Reason she is crated is because I was training her to potty outside. She isn't in there 24 hours. She is in there 4 hours at a time because I come home for lunch and play with her for 30 mins. When I get home for the day she doesn't go back in crate until next work day. She does get exercise. Where I live there isn't any parks that are dog friendly and I live in an apt so I don't have a backyard to play with her.

Edit- I wanted to add, in the above post I don't mean for people who work normal 8 hour days but the OP is making it seem like this dog gets let out for only 10 minutes a day, correct me if I'm wrong.

Perhaps I should clarify that way I won't be attacked...

Roxy is in crate 8-9 hours for the day. She is let out at lunch time for potty and play then goes back in. However that was up until 3 weeks ago where I decided to give her roam of the living room. She has been a good girl with no mistakes (fingers crossed)

Imo = in my opinion.

Sorry, I just wrote another reply... I must have misread your post. I didn't mean to come off snotty(I just re-read my post), I totally get the potty training troubles! She is not in a crate too long at all, I just misunderstood and thought you meant she was literally in there ALL day! Sorry about that!

I used to feed Jackson some of the crappier foods when I first got him. He was on Eukanuba and his poops were more frequent and really smelly. I used to not care about high quality dog food but now after I've done much research, I could never go back to feeding that junk! I just wish I had known better back then. A few brands I like are Acana, Nature's Variety, Orijen, Merrick, Wellness. You can get Wellness and Natural Balance at Petco. Blue Buffalo is sold at Petsmart which is a pretty good food!

Sorry for the misunderstanding- I didn't mean to "attack" you.

Thank you I really appreciate it... My ex BF use to feed his dogs the Eukanuba so of course he got me this dog so his choice was that food. But your right about the smelly poop and NOT TO MENTION the smelly breath UGH!!!

I like going to Petsmart because I have the pet perks. But to be honest I don't even know which one is better and or cheaper.... Def want to try a small bag of Blue buffalo just the name I like Thanks again..

Do you follow the dosage as per the food label? you can only feed dry knibble, you dont need wet food i dont think. But I dont know this much as I only have a 5 months yorkie, nearly 6 months but he only eats dry knibble and only per dosage which corresponds to his age and weight. They look hungry all the time but you should not give in..

only feed twice per day. The dosage on the food label is per day, so divide that into two. But if you feed wet food then you should cut down the dosage of the dry food.

basically if you cannot feel her ribs, then you should put her on diet.. use food which is for diet purposes? but first do your research.. I am sure people on YT will tell you what to do as they are more knowledgeable.. I am just suggesting that she should start eating something to make her lose weight and shrink her stomach a bit.

ALSO - I walk Samy every day between 15 and 30 mins depending on the weather. If it rains or is very cold i dont take him out. I also do a weekend walk maybe for an hour ? He loves it soo much... he looks healthy, eats all his food, sleeps after the walks... basically you should do the same so your yorkie can be healthy.

Here's a good photo that shows what weight a dog should be and what it looks like.

I definitely still agree a dog needs walked daily, or at least a few times a week depending on the energy levels of the dog, of course. I think it's just so important to fulfill a dogs needs to make for the best pet. I live out in the "country" on 3 acres with no sidewalks or anything so I actually drive up the road before dinner time and walk Jackson in the neighborhood 5 minutes up the road. Sounds ridiculous but it gives him just enough... all he needs is a good 30-45 minute walk to come home and he's just calm and relaxed, he goes over and chows down on his dry food, and sleeps good for the night. Weekends we sometimes do 4 mile walks. When we go to the dog park, we stay for usually 1-2 hours and comes home and just totally chill and well behaved. Exercise makes for a happy and tired dog!
