| De-Barking hey y'all~~ we bought Maxwell when he was about 3.5 years old. he came to us de-barked. in other words, his vocal chords had been cut so he makes no sound when he tries to bark. because of this i have to be very careful should Max get out of our fence. frankly, i fear for his life if he should ever need help and try to cry-out or bark. Max healed well from this surgery and has no problem eating, drinking or breathing. has anyone else tried this method on their doggies? and what has been your experience? |

| I would never do that to a dog! I think it is so cruel. I know you didn't do it. He was that way when you got him, but I hate that people can be so cruel.

| As much as I hate my dogs barking I could never do that. I am glad to hear he is doing well after his surgery. Good luck

| honestly, i couldn't do it either but i wanted to hear of other people's experiences w/this w/out them feeling like i'm attacking. KWIM? has this been a viable option for people in no-bark zones, apts, etc...? |

| I have never come across in person a dog who's barker has been removed. I personally find it a terrible thing to do. I understand your baby was adopted this way and I am glad to hear there were no complications from the surgery. Did the breeder explain to you why he/she decided to de-bark a Yorkie and the reasoning behind it all? I just really find this animal cruelty. IMO If one does not want a dog to bark then buy a cat. This by far is no offense to you in the least. I really hope that breeders or owners out there do not find this to becoming a common practice in de-barking their dogs. With proper training any dog can learn when the proper time to bark is and when to stop on command.

nah...i'm not offended at all. trust me, i've heard all this before. the vets i've talked to said the proceedure is relatively harmless w/the possibility of minor complications. i'm still wondering how common place it really is. i know when i was working in the school of vet science (while in college) many dogs were debarked. hmmmm.......

| OMG! I am horrified that anyone would do this! Does that mean that all of her dogs were "debarked"? That lady should be reported to the SPCA or PITA or something! I am very upset over this. I am glad that you are giving this poor baby a good home now. Good for you! |

one litter that Max & Sophie had we sold w/o their tails docked. i had a LOT of people come out of the woodwork to buy the puppies because they were upset w/the practice of docking tails. i just smiled & listened. and yes...we still dock their tails. i guess everyone's got their limitations. and no..we'd never de-bark our dogs.

I am not sure if there are any regulations with SPCA/PITA regarding de-barking dogs. I am also not sure if this is considered cruelty to them or those who regulate such actions towards animals???

| debarking I do not know anyone who does it now, but I used to have several breeder friends who debarked all their dogs. One bred Maltese and I kept 8 while she was traveling once. They were wonderful to board...it was funny to watch mine come up to the playyards and bark at them..they barked back, but no sound..it confused my Yorkies and they would walk away. I am not infavor of it, but understand why it is done. I have had 3 who were debarked....one wind up with a hoarse sound, the other two could bark but they sounded like they were in the back yard barking instead of in the house. I solved my problem by breeding from Yorkies who rarely barked and placing the loud mouth, trouble makers as pets...they do well not being in groups..which tended to make mine worse. They liked to indulge in competive bark offs. |
