| We can all agree that it is cruel, but it really is a cultural thing. Because I would NEVER cut a dogs tail off - it is insane and cruel. But in the states it is very common. In the old rome older men taught boys about sex and today that would be pedofilia and strictly forbidden. So removing your dogs vocal cords is a cultural thing. I would never do it, but if it is a precedure that is with minimal risk to the dog I can see why people would do it. We spay our dogs even though it is not needed - because it is too annoying to deal with heat. It is in no way different from removing vocal cords or tails!

Our doggies are spayed when they won't be bred to eliminate the risk of cancer and tumors in later life as well as unwanted pregnancies. That decision is a responsible health decision and has nothing at all to do with heat being annoying to the owners. What is a cultural practice in one country does not make the same practice a cultural one in another.

I totally agree about the tail. It doesn't need to be removed. It wasn't the tail that was the topic of discussion. The topic of discussion was barking. My Muffin alerted me many times over the years of danger when she was in her fenced yard and once when she saw someone from a window. She had no other way to tell me. That was her way of speaking. So, I must point out that you are wrong on that point as well as spaying and neutering needs.

I didn't read the whole thread, but this comment is rather odd. Here she is saying why own a dog if your not going to let them bark.. in her other thread, she threw out her 4 month old puppy at night because she was crying and she wanted sleep? how heartless is that? i don't know, but that's just odd to me... | |

| Hmm.. this thread seems to be falling a bit off topic (hehe hope I don't end up contradicing myself later! I do not believe it should even be legal. I agree with previous posters that if you don't want a barking dog then you should own a cat. (or a ferret! They're really cool and don't bark! ) Dogs are meant to bark. Period. What happens if your dog gets away from you, becomes lost and injured and cannot cry out for help? Imagine your pup stranded totally helpless and most likely in a situation w/ no hope just because you decided that their barking didn't fit your lifestyle, living quarters/standards/zones or even your patience levels. Is that really what any normal TRUE dog loving person wants? I am VERY glad that you (funky chicken) adopted your baby bc now you can give him tons and tons of extra love to try make up for what that horrible woman took away from him. Lots of yorkie loving TLC! There are TONS of humane forms of obedience training that controls dogs barking. There are other means like collars that spritz water in the direction of their face when they bark etc. (this has worked for us btw. And I find it much more humane than the 'shock' collars .. ouch) But de-barking just seems to me to be a real "easy way out" loop hole that undedicated dog owners use to avoid spending real time and practice on controlling their dogs barking/behavior. And finally, why de-bark a yorkie anyway? Their job is to let us know when people are coming and when weird sounds and things are happening right? It's what they're good at!
