♥ love my girls!! ♥ Donating Member | HELP! Is this pain med okay?? I just found out that Bella will be sent home tomorrow (after her spay, extractions, etc... surgery) with Oral Rimadyl. (She will also be given a Rimadyl injection tomorrow while she's still there, and they premedicate with Bupernex (sp??).) I've heard soooo many bad things about Rimadyl, but I'm wondering if the bad things were just with dogs using them long term?? Is it ok for her to take this for a couple of days are so post-surgically? What the heck is Bupernex? (She said it was a narcotic...) And is it safe??? |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I'm not sure but Roxie was given a shot for pain the first 24 hours and then the Rimadyl. I gave her one dose and she seemed ok by the next day so I didn't give her anymore. Hopefully people will respond who have more experience with it.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Rimadyl concerns me and unless my vet could give me a very compelling reason for one of mine to be taking it, I wouldn't give it to them. I suppose a small dosage for a couple of days wouldn't be as concerning as long term usage. Still yet I would rather not put any chemical into my dog that is not absolutely necessary, especially one so questionable. This link is more for senior dogs, but there is good information, if you haven't already read these same things. The Senior Dogs Project

| Rimadyl does seem to have more reported side effects than other drugs but all NSAIDS carry some risk. Even after a few days there can be problems but the risk is pretty low when looking at how many dogs take it. It is not my first choice and I would use it more for chronic cases of arthritis where euthanasia is the other option. However, if my vet strongly felt that it was okay for a few days, I would let her make that decision. Ellie had to be given something else post spay (buprenomorphrine) because she can't have NSAIDS. It didn't seem to work too well though.

| We prefer Deramaxx, also an NSAID, but I don't know if it's appropriate for post-operative care. My veterinarian never prescribes Rimadyl due to the increased amount of allergic reactions he sees with it. Just a thought. You should always express your concerns with your vet PRIOR to the surgery. Most are happy to talk with you as long as you don't interrupt their day or be demanding.

I'm going to read a little more, but what I'm really looking for is a little reassurance that this med is problematic only after long-term use, and that no one has heard of there being any problems after having used it for just a day or 2. I'm just a worried mom!

♥ love my girls!! ♥ Donating Member | Shoot! I was typing mine up while several of you were replying! Thanks so much for all your honest opinions.....I will definitely talk to the vet tonight when he calls (he's taking her in with him in the morning since it's 1.5 hrs from here--he lives here but works there--and we have to talk about where to meet)!! I'll let him know all my concerns and then see what he thinks. I'm guessing we should know if she's going to have a reaction to it before she leaves their office since she's getting an injection there, and then coming home with oral, right?? Or since they are different forms, might she react to the oral if she didn't with the injection? |

If it is going to cause hepatopathy, it will usually occur in the first three weeks. There is no way to predict what dogs this will happen to. About 9 adverse reactions for every 10,000 dogs taking the drug have been reported. If liver or kidney function are in question, NSAIDS should not be used. Personally I would prefer to bile acid test before giving NSAIDS to a Yorkie but that's just me. I think it should be okay if her liver and kidneys are fine but nobody can say that for sure... If it makes you feel any better, Ellie was on Metacam (NSAID) before I knew she had a liver issue and did fine.

The worst part is, one of the things I'm supposed to look for is change in appetite (e.g. loss or even increase), but that will be hard to tell for her since she's so sporadic with eating anyway.....eats a lot one day, then nearly nothing the next, then an average amount the next!
