| kennel cough I got my doggie with kennel cough. I brought him to the vet right away and he diagnosed him but he could not tell how long my puppy had already been infected with it. Mickie is very tiny he is 1.5 Ib. He is on antibiotics and I bring him to the vet twice a day for a nebulizer session. His breathing is pretty loud and heavy and the vet says that his kennel cough seems to be at a late stage which makes it harder to heal. Mickey sleeps a lot but when he is awake he doesn't act sick, he is very playful and seems to be fine physically. I want him to get better as soon as possible, so if anybody has any suggestions as to what else I can do to help Mickey get better sooner I will appreciate it. Thank you! | I was unfortunate enough to get a puppy with kennel cough. My vet was reluctant to use certain antibiotics due to risks associated with giving them to small puppies. He tried several antibiotics but she wasn't getting better. Well, Bonnie suffered with this for 2 months until he finally relented and gave her Tamaril. It cleared her up really quickly and she seems to have suffered no ill effects due to it. Kennel cough is contagious so you can't have an affected dog around other dogs. |

My dog also came with kennel cough...I think he was 4 months old?? It took a LONG time for him to get rid of it. I don't know if that is typical or because he has congenital liver shunts and if his immune system was low?? Not sure. Where did you get yours? From a breeder? I got mine in Connecticut yorkielovs2chat

Hello- Both my pups had kennel cough when we got them, and Willow has had it twice. The first time Biscuit and Willow had it, we did rounds of antibiotics, but when Willow got reinfected (from Biscuit after he got his intranasal vaccine), we didn't take her to the vet at all, which meant no meds, and it went away quicker than it ever had before. At the time she was on a raw diet and we also bought natural remedies (basically cough supressants) from onlynaturalpetstore.com. Also, at night, we would put them in a room with a vaporizor with vicks in it, it helped to ease their little throats so they could heal quicker.....it seemed to help alot.

I got mine from a family with two yorkies who had puppies, I wouldn't exactly call them breeders. I don't know what to do. I've been reading so many different responses about kennel cough and as to how to treat it. My mickiey takes antibiotics 3x a day and goes twice a day to the vet for nebulizer which is like vaporizer. I am not sure whether I Should continue on having him go through these treatments or just let him be and heal on his own. Mickey doesn't act like he is sick; he is always playing and running around it's only his breathing that's heavy, doesn't even cough. The only issue is that Mickiey hasn't had any vaccines yet and the vet says that he can't have any vaccinations until he heals. Does anybody know if this is true or can he actually have vaccines while sick?

Hmmm, I haven't heard of skiping vaccines for that. Both of mine had their vaccines while they had kennel cough. And I know how confused you feel. We got such conflicting information too, some saying that antibiotics only prolong the cough and others warning that kennel cough can turn into pneumonia without treatment. After a lot of thinking we decided to take the natural approach, and it worked for us. It's tricky. In my opinion, kennel cough isn't the worst thing that can happen, and isn't worth the vaccine (unless your dog is around a lot of other dogs)or anitbiotics. The antibiotics seemed to prolong it in our dogs. When Willow had her first and second bout, we didn't use them, I think we only gave her one dose the first time when she was a puppy, but nothing else after that. AND she was around the size of your puppy (she is only 2.6 pounds now, full grown). I just didn't like the thought of pumping her tiny body with all those drugs. So while I was hesitant at first, we skipped the vet and she healed just fine, quicker actually. The key is to boost their immune system as much as you can through diet....we also used natural remedies as well, just to ease her throat. If I were you, I would speak to another vet about vaccines, since your puppy seems to be feeling ok, I would skip the vet trips for the nebulizer and use a vaporizer at home, and try to forgo the antibiotics for awhile....see what happens. As long as he isn't getting any worse, just keep up with the vaporizer and try a cough suppressant (I highly recommend onlynaturalpetstore.com, they have a few to chose from). I know how frustrating and worriesome it can be, especially because it seems to take forever for it to go away. Good luck with whatever you decide with your baby.

I just rescued a Yorkie from a dog pound and he has terrible kennel cough. He is about 9 years old, is deaf, and almost totally blind. He's a pretty big boy, about 8 or 9 lbs and had all his shots at the dog pound before I got him, but not the bordettello shot. I have him isolated from my other babies until the cough goes away. He sleeps most of the day, but when he wakes up he starts with the racking cough and sneezing. My heart hurts for him! I, too am unsure whether to go the homeopathic or antibiotic route. We see the vet Friday, but if anyone has any ideas for relief in the interim I would greatly appreciate it. He has his own bedroom right now so I could do the humidifier thing. I also wonder if he may have allergies, and if there is anything at my local health food store I could use?

First I just want to say that you did a great thing by rescuing him. I feel so terrible when I hear stories of sick doggies, my heart really hurts for them. Second thing is that I am going through this Kennel Cough myself right now so I can't tell you exactly what approach is better because Mickiey didn't heal yet, but in three days our 10 day treatment of antibiotics will end and although I think he is getting a little bit better I will put him on all natural supplements and try to heal him myself. I read a ton of different threads and did research and found that most people say that those puppies that are treated with antibiotics take longer to get better than those who are treated by their owners with just a lot of relaxing, vaporizer and natural supplements. I hope people with actual experience will respond but from my research your own method might be better than the vet's.
