| Ear Care Tips Last night Gizmo was miserable. He kept scratching at his ears and whining. So, first thing this morning, John took him to the vet. He has a bacterial ear infection and has some prescription medication. The good news is that he is very healthy and 7 and a half pounds at 9 and a half months old. Here's my question...What ear care procedures should we follow to prevent this sort of infection? My husband and I disagree on this, so your input would be appreciated. He thinks that it could not have been prevented, and that I worry too much. (The worry too much is probably true. ) -remove inner ear hair every six weeks or so? (how often, is it necessary at all?) -should the ears be blocked or covered during baths to prevent water from entering the ear canal? (If so, what do you use?) -should we put an ear wash in his ears? How often? -should we put a drying agent in his ears? Which one? How often? Thanks! YTers always have such wonderful advice, and I greatly appreciate it.

| I don't know if it could've been prevented. Since it isn't a yeast infection I will say probably not. It is always best to use something to block the water from getting in their ears. I use cotton balls for Ellie. On Animal Planet's Emergency Vets, one of the doctors said it is best to clean dogs ears out once a week during the summer. I would think that would be a good thing to do year round. We use Chlorhexiderm here. It is a blue liquid that dries them but I think it clean also.

I did the cotton balls a couple of times, but didn't think it did that much good. Maybe I'll start to do that again. Thanks for the feedback.

| I got it from the vet but I think 1800 Petmeds has it and you shouldn't need a prescription for it.

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | I put an ear cleaner in there maybe once a month. When I bathe lulu and get to washing her head I tend to mush down her ears so it seals from any water getting in there. Usually after her bath I take the damp end of the towel and wip her ear out.

Therapy Dog Donating Member | Ahh poor Gizmo....Izzy gets her ears cleaned when at the groomers 1x a month and she is going Saturday so I'll ask him what he uses. When I bathe her in between grooming visits I just put cotton balls in her ears and smoosh them down too when rinsing her head.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Wylie had ear probs before he was diagnosed w/ an infection. My vet didn't even bother to figure out WHAT it was - she just said "let's treat for everything that could be in his ear" - so we did a presription ointment for a week. One cleaner I did like was from Petsmart - and it contains aloe - so it not only cleans the ear but also soothes it, which is nice.

| Hey, I use Cotton balls in Abby's ear when I bathe her and the vet gave me a cleaning solution that I should place in her ear 2-3 times per week. After I took her to the vet because of wax build up he told me to follow that simple procedure and her ears should be fine. Ever since I have done that her ears have been fine. Hopethat helps. Hope he feels better... Rebecca

| Thanks everyone! Gizmo is doing much better. He's a little tired tonight, but not scratching his ears. He didn't get much sleep last night, so it's understandable.

| Some general ear care pointers... I use an ear wash to clean the ears of mine every week. Also, a drop or two of rubbing alcohol to remove any water. Yes, pull the hair out of the ears....sounds horrible, but mine don't even flinch. Ear infections can be the result of excess scratching. Make sure that the dog is not scratching as a result of a food alergy. (Biting paws may be another sign.) |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Sorry Hon...I haven't been online with all the hub bub of xmas. I use Starzko's Ear Cleaner and Theraputic Treatment it contains natural Ecualyptus extract. It's supposed to be good to treat inflammation and odors. I got it from KvVet Supply. But there are tons of these types of cleaners in the store. Luck.
