I don't know if it could've been prevented. Since it isn't a yeast infection I will say probably not. It is always best to use something to block the water from getting in their ears. I use cotton balls for Ellie. On Animal Planet's Emergency Vets, one of the doctors said it is best to clean dogs ears out once a week during the summer. I would think that would be a good thing to do year round. We use Chlorhexiderm here. It is a blue liquid that dries them but I think it clean also.
