| :Embarassed: question about nails I'm not sure how it happened but Layla's nails are very long. We have a dremmel but she hates it... i can't get much done because she squirms and it makes me nervous that i'll catch her fur. Anyways... my question is. Has anyone had to bring thier pup to the vet to have their nails cut back? do they put them out for it?? i know it will hurt and she will bleed. however if they don't put them out i won't bring her.. i'll just keep plugging away hoping that i am making progress..... |

| I do. My vet says to bring him any time. He just takes a tiny bit off each nail and doesn't bleed. I can't do it, I chicken out, afraid of cutting the quick. They are long now, but we're going to the vet on Sat for his 1-year check up. |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | They won't cut down to the quick unless they are under. SO if she hasn't been spayed yet they will do it then so you can work back at keeping it short. You can either increase your time walking her because it will wear it down naturally or you can take her in at least once a week and have them cut it some..it will make the quick recede. I never used a dremel..I try to take a bit off every week as part of her bath experience because the nail is a bit softer and for the most part they are fairly mello after the spa treatment.

| Shelby & Seymour's groomer does a nail trim for us. She takes a very small tip off....... and there is not any bleeding. It can happen that the nail gets cut too short (we haven't had this) and they use a syptic solution or powder to keep the nail from bleeding. It is important that if they go too deep, that the bleeding is stopped. I would think that your vet or groomer (but, I believe that you do your own grooming, right?) would be a good candidate to trim her nails. Good Luck to you!!!

| Depending on your vet, they may or may not make them bleed. A few vets think that while the dog is there, it is their job to get them as short as possible, so it will hurt. Others just take a little bit off. Since that is the case, you might as well do it yourself... They will trim nails while the dog is under for something else but it isn't routine to put them out for that and I wouldn't give a dog a sedative or anesthesia just to do this unless it was causing physical problems or the dog was very aggressive. Drugs are just too dangerous for that and the milder drugs won't block too much pain I don't think.

| My Addison's nails had gotten long over the winter and now we are almost finished getting them back to "normal" I take her every other week and have them clipped by a wonderful groomer! Usually a nail trim is a walk in thing no apointment needed. I just had to make it a point to remember that every saturady morning for a few weeks then every other we had to get up and go! After we finish we go walk on a jog path at a nature trail to wear them down a little more! It can be fixed it just takes some time! Oh and a nail trim is very inexpensive, just a few dollars. Just let the groomer or tech know why you guys are needing the trim so they dont cut too deep!

| When nails are left to grow too long the quick (which is where the blood is at) also grows longer...To force the quick back and get the nails to a shorter length you have to trim the nails back, right before the quick...Then as suggested you need to keep the nails trimmed back on a weekly basis to send a message to the quick to back off...With deligence you will get the nails back under control... Nails are very important to keep short, it is like us not wearing the correct shoes...too long of nails effects how our dogs walk ...If they can not rock forward on their foot it changes their gait and can cause foot problems, leg problems or back problems... Good luck getting them shorter...I know you can do it! ~Laura

| i always get their nails "quick clipped" when they are under for any reason. They are also called show clip and are almost back to the skin. These can only be done when they are out. It will give you a fresh start on their nails as that vein will retreat and you can again keep them very short. Do no try to do this yourself!! I just had Candy spayed and got her nails quick clipped. She doesn't have any nails right now and it is wonderful. I'll just keep them clipped once a month so that they don't get out long again. Good luck!! |

| Mojo loves to have his nails clipped...we always do them after the bath, he lays on his back on my legs. I just clip a little and then a little more until it isn't white powdery. Sometimes, he plays w/ a tiny toy or a Flossie or a chewy while I am doing it. LilyGrace, on the other hand.....she has to be standing up. I normally have her wrapped in a warm towel (since she is just out of the bath) and clip them that way. My vet will allow us to bring them in for nail clips and they don't charge us (the vet tech does it). But I have done them at home for a long time now. When Lily came to us, hers were REALLY long, but little by little, they have gotten shorter!
