| Gingi jumped off bed & now can't stand on rear legs My sister's Yorkie jumped off the bed last night and yelped as she landed, then could not use her rear legs. She's been x-rayed and they haven't found any breaks -- but she's still not using her legs. She does have feeling in the legs, and she isn't crying. The docs are medicating her and saying to keep her very quiet, and hopefully she'll start to feel more sure on her feet and will try using her rear legs again. If not, they'll do an MRI tomorrow. I'm writing to ask if anyone has had this type of experience before? Gingi is nine years old and has been in good health -- was running all around yesterday before her jump from the bed. Thanks for any info you may have.... Kim

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | OMG poor baby ! It sounds like she really did hurt her back - that's awful and I hope they can find out what's wrong.... I hate thinking about a small dog getting an MRI but it sounds like that's just what they need to do - that's so sad and I'm so sorry !! I hope she'll be ok and this is just temporary.... |

| So sorry to hear this -- I know it must be breaking you and your sister's hearts. But hopefully she just has a sprain that will be fine with some rest and maybe some NSAIDs (if the vet says okay). Heal fast Gingi!

| Poor Gingi I sure hope this is temporary. Maybe she's just scared to use the back legs, but if she doesn't I'd let the vet do whatever needs to be done to find out what's going on. Prayers and yorkie kisses

| my duke was jumping on the bed, missed, and landed on his back legs hard. he would not bend them and was not active for about 24 hours. i slept in the floor with him and made sure he didn't try to jump or move them around too much. he would get in the most awful positions and i was so scared. he would shake too. but, we woke up the next morning and he was fine. hope she is okay.

| Poor baby hope the legs will be better soon. Will keep fingers crossed that it is a sprang and the soreness will go away soon. These little ones don't realize they are so small. They think they can whip a bulldog! Hugs

| Gingi has been diagnosed - two torn ligaments! Thanks so much for all of your care and concern. Today my sister took Gingi to a specialist, who said that she's apparently torn ligaments in BOTH rear knees. She'll have surgery tomorrow. The *extremely* good news is that they think she'll make a full recovery. No casts -- just bedrest for a week, then small bits of moving about -- and, by week #4, hopefully she'll be close to her old self. Eventually her knees may be stronger than they were to start with. So.... for our little Kasey we're thinking it may be time to buy stairs to put by the bed, so she stops jumping off the bed too! Thanks again for all of your concern and support. It felt great. I'm glad to have good news to report. Kim

| just a word of caution, and yours may go down the stairs just fine... but, my duke goes up his stairs to the bed just fine, but he will not go down them. i made a landing pad of three stacked floor pillows and he uses that. it's a maze for me to get into bed, but hopefully it's a little easier on him.

| Thanks for that advice I might take a look at pillows as an option if Kasey refuses to use the stairs. (Or maybe I'll install a mini-escalator for her. LOL. The things we do for our Yorkies!!) Thanks.....

| My little Gabby did the same thing last year. She attempted to jump and tore her cruciate in both knees (on two separate occasions...one knee one day and the other a month later). She recovered very well. Surgery was easy....make sure they provide you with plenty of pain meds...She was very sore after coming home. Also as an FYI at night so she didn't go roaming I put her in a newborn nightgown and it kept her from walking around when I was sleeping after she started feeling like herself. Good luck....I tell Gabby she has bionic legs now lol ;-) |

| I'm so glad it's something that can be corrected. I just hate that she'll be having surgery. Hope everything goes well.
