| It sounds like an irritated bowel that doesn't want to heal. You may have to try a different bland diet as some don't work with some dogs. Purina puts out a gastro intestinal diet available through the Vet, both a tin and a dry one. You might try that one. Also, for diarrhea that works wonders is pumpkin. Get a tin of the Pure pumpkin, not the pie filling. It will say on the can you can use if for pie filling but it says Pure Pumpkin on it. Give about a teaspoon twice a day. If she doesn't eat it in her food add some water and use a big syringe, put it at the side of her mouth and get her to lick it up that way. If she has been on all those kind of meds, she may need to repopulate her gut with good bacteria. A good life bacteria Yogurt would work or you can go to the health food store and get acidophillus capsules. If you use the yogurt about a tsp. would be enough. IF you get the capsules probably about 1/4 capsule will do. Vets also sell probiotics in a tube in their clinics. You can ask about that if you want. You should see a difference in a few days. |

| My little Yorkie had similar symptoms. They had me put him on chicken and rice as well - it only made the symptoms worse. It turns out that the only thing that makes him better is Eukenuba low residue dog food (you buy it at the vet). He was having the symptoms because his little liver was not dealing with protein the way it should. We still don't know why... but we are relieved. We put him on this food almost a year ago and he has not had another problem since. Good Luck! |

| Just a thought - Elivira had diareah after I got her. Her breeder had her on antibiotics because one of the other pups had coccidea (sp) and I took her to my vet, and he said finish those, I did, still diareah, he put her on some different ones, still had the runs (no blood luckily, but it would have eventually). She was eating good - just watery stools. Back to vet - he said okay, lets try this - NO antibiotics - they m ay be killing the healthy bacteria, and he gave her a mouthful of something (for good bacteria) and some special diet for sensitive tummies (purina prescrption diet) and walla - it got better, and better - in a week she had real poop. I remember calling my neighbor who had been worried about her and saying "We have real poop today!". I know - weird. May ask him about it???

| I agree here with the probiotic methods. I think though that you're beyond what yogurt will help. Yogurt will do the trick if you're just working with sticky poo or trying to prevent diarrhea, but once you've got it, diarrhea is hard to get rid of with yogurt alone. Lactibacillius tablets or granules can be purchased from most any pharmacy (I know the pharmacy where I work carries them). Remember when dosing any type of probiotic, if you're also giving an antibiotic, to alternate the medications so that there are at least a couple to three hours between doses of each one of the medicines. They will counteract each other if you don't. You've treated so many things with antibiotics lately that you've killed out ALL bacteria in the poor baby, good and bad. You need to replenish the good bacteria in her intestines so that the diarrhea will go away. This is the reason for adding Lactibacillius tablets/granules to the little one's food. Check with your vet.

| I would stay with my vet. Go back and share your concerns. Status quo isn't acceptable and you know something further needs to be done - find out what her next step might be and what her thinking is. Call this visit a "consultation" (for you). Only after a fair discussion and a better understanding of the situation, would I change vets. I'm glad you like the vet you have. That, in itself, is worth a lot. I wish you the best of luck. It is interesting that your little puppy is doing so well - so energetic, etc., in spite of her problems. This certainly must be a good sign for both you and the vet. Still - she needs to recover from the problems she is having. Carol Jean |

| In our area we have GI specalists who would be treating a problem this extensive and that has gone on so long. The antibiotics will kill ALL bacteria in the bowel and the beneficial ones must be replaced IMO. I ALWAYS use BeneBac when any of mine are on antibiotics or if a nursing mom is on antibiotics. BeneBac is beneficial bacteria and is made for many species and they do make one for dogs. I give a small tube of it to buyers of my puppies with instructions to use it for the first coupla days and under any stress situations..IBS is a condition that these babies get and is very difficult to deal with..All of that Pepto would worry me but your vet knows what he likes to prescribe and what works for him.. I know how hard it is to try to keep your spirits up in these times. You need to take care of yourself as well....I pray that your son and your furbaby both get well and do it soon.. |

Thanks again for all the advice and well wishes... as of last night she stopped eating the prescription diet again she did this last time we tried it too (ate it for like 2 days then refused it) i really dont know what to do i can't starve her but the other foods are making her sick or at least not helping is my understanding... | |

| Hi Snickers Mom - I'm so sorry to hear your pup is not well, but happy to hear she seems to be getting better - my puppy has been having a similar trouble - Initially, diarrhea that was diagnosed with a fresh stool sample as very definitely Giardia, treated and then diarrhea again. We thought it was the Giardia back again, they told me I didn't have him on antibiotics long enough and they prescribed Panacur - which kept him on the diarrhea train for a while longer. Then he got REALLY sick - 106 fever, dehydrated. Spent the day at the vets getting fluids, then home where I worried and worried - kept him hydrated giving him chicken soup and cottage cheese and yogurt while he was on another antibiotic. Now he is better, but is so prone to stress and soft stool - every time I try to give him his old food, which he did fine on for so long! He gets diarrhea. So I'm keeping him on Rice and Chicken Soup and plain Yogurt and some small bites of boiled chicken and lamb. Glad to hear I'm not the only one having the problem - It is very scary when you don't know what's going on! I keep Buddy pretty well confined so thankfully I haven't had troubles with the carpet. Even with diarrhea he uses his Wizdog or the extra pad I keep in the bathroom. Anyway - Sorry to hear of your trouble - and I thought I had it bad!!! Hugs! |
