My little Yorkie had similar symptoms. They had me put him on chicken and rice as well - it only made the symptoms worse. It turns out that the only thing that makes him better is Eukenuba low residue dog food (you buy it at the vet). He was having the symptoms because his little liver was not dealing with protein the way it should. We still don't know why... but we are relieved. We put him on this food almost a year ago and he has not had another problem since.
