| Lacrimal Gland Aplasia After grieving the loss of my precious little Kia for 7 months-I contacted a Yorkie Show Breeder, on 8/25. She said she had tiny puppies-12 weeks old, and we could drive down to S. IN to see them. We made the 5 hour drive and picked out a tiny little boy. She said they needed to stay with her longer, because they were so tiny. So, we went back, 9/26 and brought our little boy home. My husband took him to the Vet, and he had yeast infections in both ears, Giardia, and worst of all-Lacrimal Gland Aplasia in his left eye, and our new Vet said it may yet develop in his right eye. He had a bacterial infection in his eye, with green pus. So, the Vet prescribed Neobacimyx Opthalmic ointment for the infection, and Tobramycin Opthalmic Solution, to attempt to stimulate tear production. She said if it doesn't work, there is one more medication we can try, and if it doesn't work, then he will require surgery. I researched the surgery and it doesn't sound good: parotid duct transposition ("PDT") may be performed. This is a tedious surgery performed under general anesthesia and involves rerouting a salivary gland so its secretions empty onto the ocular surface instead of into the mouth. This provides a constant flow of wetness to the eye surface, but can also lead to mineralization deposition on the cornea or around the eyelids. Does anyone have any experience with this condition? I am absolutely heartsick. The breeder doesn't pay medical bills. She offered to take him back and give us a female from the litter, but we felt afraid to take another puppy from a litter, whose Sire & Dam produced a puppy with such a serious congenital condition. TIA Sheila |

| [SIZE="3"]Oh Sheila this is just so very sad. I know nothing about PDT. I will certainly say prayers for your baby. I don't blame you for not wanting another pup from the same litter. This breeder needs to take responsibility for this medical condition. What does your Health Guarantee for this pup state about medical issues and congenital conditions?

Esp. for your prayers for my little one. The health guarantee covers congenital conditions that would cause death. The breeder will only take him back, in exchange for another puppy. For 3 months after my little Kia died, I didn't leave my bedroom for 3 months. My MS progressed rapidly. For 6 months, I literally woke from nightmares about her, screaming! I didn't go out socially, at all, for 7 months. When I spoke to this breeder, I told her about my MS and how depressed I was over losing my little Kia, so unnecessarily. (I lost her two years to the date that I lost my sweet Sydney.) She promised me, that she would take the puppy to the Vet, and make sure he was 100% healthy, before we made the 2nd trip, to bring him home. My MS is progressing further, from the stress of worrying about him. My husband e-mailed the breeder & asked her to please send his registration papers before 11/25, because I need to see our Attorney and have a Living Trust & DNR in place, because I may have surgery right after the 1st of the year. (Not related to my MS) She said she was sorry, she had offered to take him back, but that is all she can do. So, we just pray very hard, he won't need the surgery. He is so tiny-I am afraid I will lose him. I "thought" I had done my homework about this breeder. All 3 of my girls, over 32 years, came to us, so healthy, from wonderful Show breeders. Sheila

| Oh my God, I'm so sorry to hear this, Sheila. I pray everything goes well with your boy so he doesn't need the surgery. The amount of love you have for your pups just shines crystal clear through your words and I couldn't imagine dealing with something like that while you're mourning Kia. I know it would be very hard for me after how heartbroken I was (and still am) about my girl Minnie dying.

| I'm not a fan of contracts that make the buyer return the puppy to get a replacement or refund when there is a health issue. The only thing I can think of is look to see if your state has puppy lemon laws. I'm sorry the breeder isn't doing more. Unfortunately not ALL show breeders are caring breeders...there are bad breeders even amongst the show community. Some just aren't making health a priority.

I feel the same way as you. I am still so very heartbroken over Kia dying. We have to put Tacrolimus drops in his eyes, twice a day, and they sting. The Ophthamologist at Purdue in West LaFayette, that my Vet is consulting, advised trying the drops to see if there is any tissue, at all, to stimulate tear production. He has to go back for his 3rd Schimrer tear test next Tuesday. I just keep praying that the drops will work.

No puppy lemon laws in Indiana. Thank you-I am just stunned that she allowed this precious little boy to suffer. I couldn't, in good conscience, return him to those living conditions.

| I'm so sorry, Sheila. I didn't know your new puppy was sick. That's just so sad that a show breeder did that. It is heartbreaking.

But she doesn't care, because she knows I can't do anything about it. She was so nice, talking with me, about the way I lost Kia, my grief over losing my two girls, two years to the date of each other, and it causing my MS to progress. She promised me, that she would take my puppy to the Vet, before I brought him home, and make sure he was 100% ok. After we caught her in her lies-she got nasty. All I can do, is spread the word, so maybe she will stop selling sick puppies.

| I am so sorry you are going through all this. Maybe with you posting her name she will see this and want to save her reputation. I pray she will step up and do what is right here. This puppy is her responsibility. Praying for your little one to fully recover.

| Is there a mother club in your state you could contact? Maybe they could give her a push to do what is right.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I am so very sorry Yorkieville 200. How-ever you did purchase a dog with a clear health guarantee that only covers genetic defects leading to death. You did knowingly sign this contract with this proviso; which is not btw a whole lot of a health guarantee. Now having said this; I am so very very sorry for what you and your pup are under-going right now. This appears to be a rare condition. You could take this up with the mother club; www.ytca.org. And see if there could be any re-dress there with this breeder; if he/she is a member of the club. I would have hoped that a show breeder, would have shown more compassion to you and your dog in this situation. Maybe offered you some re-compense for the medical bills. Also there might be something that can be done if the breeders vet actually certified a clear health clearance, and your vet diagnosed this eye condition very early on when you first brought your pup to your vet. Something to consider. Best of luck with your pup
