Default Lacrimal Gland Aplasia

After grieving the loss of my precious little Kia for 7 months-I contacted a Yorkie Show Breeder, on 8/25.

She said she had tiny puppies-12 weeks old, and we could drive down to S. IN to see them.

We made the 5 hour drive and picked out a tiny little boy. She said they needed to stay with her longer, because they were so tiny.

So, we went back, 9/26 and brought our little boy home.

My husband took him to the Vet, and he had yeast infections in both ears, Giardia, and worst of all-Lacrimal Gland Aplasia in his left eye, and our new Vet said it may yet develop in his right eye.

He had a bacterial infection in his eye, with green pus.

So, the Vet prescribed Neobacimyx Opthalmic ointment for the infection, and Tobramycin Opthalmic Solution, to attempt to stimulate tear production.

She said if it doesn't work, there is one more medication we can try, and if it doesn't work, then he will require surgery.

I researched the surgery and it doesn't sound good: parotid duct transposition ("PDT") may be performed. This is a tedious surgery performed under general anesthesia and involves rerouting a salivary gland so its secretions empty onto the ocular surface instead of into the mouth. This provides a constant flow of wetness to the eye surface, but can also lead to mineralization deposition on the cornea or around the eyelids.

Does anyone have any experience with this condition?

I am absolutely heartsick.

The breeder doesn't pay medical bills. She offered to take him back and give us a female from the litter, but we felt afraid to take another puppy from a litter, whose Sire & Dam produced a puppy with such a serious congenital condition.

TIA

Sheila
