| infection by eye When Barney woke up this morning his left eye was nearly swollen shut. It is not red or oozy, but the skin under it is pink, swollen, and hard. I took him to the vet this afternoon. He said he has an infection near his eye, but his eye is actually fine. He prescribed 2 meds, Novox and Baytril. As I was leaving, the assistant said not to be shocked if it bursts open and drains. I asked if she meant that it would drain out of his eye. She said no, his skin will actually come open and the infection will drain out of it. Does this sound odd to any of you? Has anyone ever had a yorkie with an infection on their face? Did it pop open?

Donating YT 500 Club Member | No I have no experience of this with dogs, but it does seem normal, like,if you had a sty on your eyelid or a cyst frm an in growing hair or something, at some stage it is gonna pop.

| Poor Barney! I'm glad you got him to the vet right away, and I hope the meds work quickly. Did the vet point out a specific spot around the eye where the infection might be coming from? There is another Yorkie here who had a small wound open up below his eye. It turned out to be a dental related problem.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Is there no lump or could the vet not tell you where it was at all? If you knew where it was you could make sure to check it. If you sort of know but not exactly you could try a warm compress in that area which should help the infection come to the surface and ease the tension so that if it does ooze it is more gentle. How is he doing, is it seem to really bother him? I hope it sorts itself put soon so you are both relieved. Let us know how he is doing tomorrow.

Yes, there is a very big lump. It is just below his eye and his skin is pink and looks irritated. Fortunately, he does not seem to be bothered by it. Every now and then, he stops playing and rubs his face on the floor. Otherwise, he's fine. I will try the warm compress. Maybe that will bring some of it out. Thanks for the thoughts.

| I'm with Maximo....it sounds like it could be dental related. You might not necessarily see anything by examining his mouth.

| He has five days worth of meds for infection and swelling. I'm not sure what to do. Should I take him back and ask him to check again or give the meds time to work? Our vet does dentals, but I do not know how knowledgeable he is about teeth. I know that warm compresses are bad for humans with abscesses so I better hold off on Barney until I know for sure. Here's a photo. The big bump beneath the eye is the infected part. His eye is weepy in the photo, but there hasn't been any "gunk" coming out of it. By the way, I know how pitiful it looks. It breaks my heart to see him looking like this. But I don't really know what else to do at this point. I just hope that whatever is in there comes out soon. It looks painful.

It could be a simple infection....hard to say. I would keep a very very close eye on it. That looks like a huge bump...which could be a salivary gland...but not sure because I don't know if they are located there. There is one close to the eye, but it causes the eye to bulge.

| The thing that worries me is that it may clear up now, but if it is due to a dental issue, it will come back.

Here is her thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ck-please.html Becky, seeing the picture, I think it must be dental. Not all tooth/oral problems are visible without xray. I agree with Linda's suggestion to see a specialist. It will save both misery and pain for you and Barney in the long run. I would be very concerned about the effect of this on the eye too -- and would want to take care of it as soon as possible. Praying for your little guy. Keep up updated.

| Becky, I am reading the thread I linked above and I am reminded of another case here on YT where the pup had a microscopic foreign object embedded in his skin in his cheek. It caused a wound that would not heal and an infection.

| You know, it does seem like this could be a possibility. This came on so quickly. He is bad to rub his face. I am wondering if maybe something got lodged in there when he was face rubbing. I'm also wondering if it could be a spider bite. We are keeping a very close eye on him. He received his first round of meds tonight. If I don't see improvement soon, I will take him for a second opinion. He is eating great and playing like normal. I don't think he's even aware that he has an enormous infection on his face. I love our vet. He always remains so calm and so far he has been right on the money with each of our pets' diagnoses. I hope this holds out with this one.
