Becky, seeing the picture, I think it must be dental. Not all tooth/oral problems are visible without xray.
I agree with Linda's suggestion to see a specialist. It will save both misery and pain for you and Barney in the long run. I would be very concerned about the effect of this on the eye too -- and would want to take care of it as soon as possible.
