| Elliott woke up this morning vomiting yellow bile and retching very bad. I had switched him back to regular food on the direction of his regular vet. He suggested his liver levels were not off enough to be concerned with. He was very lathargic and slept most of the day, seemed very out of it since I switched his food. I put him back on the liver support food and he had a much better day today. I wonder even though his levels aren't off dramaticaly that maybe he does need the food?? I am not sure... he goes back to his specialist when he has his post surgery check up in 4 weeks. The tests showed he does have a small liver, and the shape and color are very likely mycrovascular dysplasia, must not be bad enough to throw his levels off alot but maybe bad enough that the liver diet helps him feel better...not sure..would love to hear your thoughts... |

| I agree with Mandies mom, just basing it on the food facts. Could he have a more sensitive stomach due to all the previous meds and he was ok as long as he was eating the liver food, that was easier to digest? Now he cannot take his old regular food? Or could it just be the food was changed too fast? I so want it not to be a liver issue and am searching for any other reason. Praying for little Elliott and hoping there is no liver disfunction. So sorry for the set back. Get well soon. |

| Many regular vets don't deal much with liver shunt. A lot of people think it is very common in the breed (it is more likely to occur in them than others) but honestly it is not. This is why I believe in going to specialists for things like this. They are the ones who see these things all of the time. I also do consults with a vet nutrionist for pups like Elliott. I have a few pups in my home on special diets. If you might be interested in seeing one, here is a link that can help you find a board certified internal med vet: American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine > Home

| I'm not an expert either but I definitely agree with keeping him on the special food, certainly no harm done with it. I say let him get over one issue, before changing another. praying he feels better soon!

| Thank you all again for your support...Elliott had a good morning this morning...we are seeing a specialist for the liver issues he is at our speciality vet hospital and they are very good. We just don't go to see him for a few more weeks. We went to our regular vet for a little eye gunk to get some drops. He went over Elliott's post surgery notes and blood and protein c test that the specialist sent over. He said he was not overly concerned so the regular food was better for Elliott. We will continue for the time being on the liver diet until we see the specialist again.. They wanted to wait to revisit his possible liver issues until his neck was well on the mend. Thank you again for all of your help navigating through all of this, it is a blessing to have support from you all who have been through this and with such helpful information. |

| I would definitely not change anything the specialist suggested. You know the old saying "it it's not broke, don't fix it" .....teach that to your regular vet.

| I'm glad to hear Elliot's neck pain was sorted out, I'm sorry to hear he has been sick also. You might want to add some Milk Thistle to his diet, and a real good Multi Vitamin supplement. I have been using a product called Pet Kelp, Wellness Formula (they have different formulas for different problems), it has 70 mineral and vitamins from ocean kelp plus Antioxidants from blueberries and flax-seed. It has done wonders with my Petey who has Cushings disease which effects his liver and multiple other organs. For Petey's food, I found giving him only crunchies made his symptoms worse, he was vomiting up acid and having diarrhea, so I started making his food which I still add a few of his crunchies to (only about a dozen per meal), and it works great! I make it up once or twice a month and freeze it in small containers, I just take out enough for maybe 2 or 3 days. I hope the Vets find out what's wrong with your little guy, until then, take care! |

| Elliott is doing great so far....had his stitches out and doctor said he is healing nicely!!! He is still not 100% but I think it is just going to take some more healing time. He goes back to specialist to decide if biopsy of liver is necessary July 23rd so until then we continue on the liver diet and meds. Thank you all again for your support and concern. Your prayers and good thoughts mean the very most to us because we came here looking for help in a very bad time and we found a community of very caring loving friends....thank you |
