| Opinion on "Black Spots" I need your opinion on Emee’s skin problem. 5/9 – Rabies Shot 6/10 – Spay and Liver biopsy 6/29 – Infection under skin on right hip. Antibiotics and prednisone. Vet thinks it might be a reaction to the rabies shot 7/15 – Sore is healing but has lost hair on right hip and skin around sore is now black. 7/31 – Small black spot on other side of hip – vet recommends onesie and Benadryl and see what happens. Emee does not appear to be biting the skin but the hair is now very short at the dark spot. 8/15 – another dark spot appears and the spots are getting larger. Vet still thinks it might be a reaction to the rabies shot and wants to do a biopsy. Anyone ever experience this. My little baby is beginning to look like a gray Dalmatian. She eats great and is very active. I don’t see her scratching herself but she does love to roll on her back and scratch. The black spots are only on her back and do not appear as sores. Any ideas?

| Would it show in a picture if you can post it? perhaps more people can recognize it by seeing the actual spot. Blessings. XOXO

| Can they do a skin scraping to see if it is a fungus? You might want to consult a specialist.

| I've had black spots on my dogs - in our case, it was a staph infection and we needed to treat it with 30 days worth of Simplicef. I would suggest a consult with a board certified veterinary dermatologist for a diagnosis.

| Cathy suggested a staph infection. I would def want to go further with a specialist, before it gets too bad. It certainly isn't normal or common.

| I could be dead wrong, but it might be cutaneous vasculitis. My DIL's dog had that following a DHPP. It is very common with rabies. The treatment is steroids....for at least one month! My suggestion is to get another opinion immediately!

| I'm not a vet, but that is not the look of a staph infection. OMG this is awful, please go to another vet as LadyJane suggested.

| I cannot believe how little information there is on cutaneous vasculitis. I just googled it hoping to find some pictures and information for you The symptoms vary...some dogs have darkening of the hair and some lose patches of hair. Dixie was losing hair on her belly and down her back. She ended up with some scarring and permanent hair loss. Like I said, I could be wrong....but I swear that it looks like it and sounds like it. The fact that the vet mentioned it might be from the rabies even makes me more suspicious of it. I don't know that a biopsy is needed for a diagnosis, but could be. My vet took one look and knew what it was....Dixie had been to another vet first who did not know what it was.

♥Trained by my pups♥ Donating YT 500 Club Member | Lexi developed a black spot this last year I thought it was just the last time i gave her a haircut that her hair was coming in darker. But you have me thinking now. It was one area never looked scabby never itched just the hair color was darker. Never slowed down or acted like it bothered her an any way. Other then these episodes we had that i was sure was due to a allergies. But now you have me thinking the spot could have been a warning sign. She had been to the vet and had blood work done and had been spayed this spring. Did not notice the black spot until I shaved her this spring. Again I believe it never bothered her at all. And was just a coarser hair growing in that spot but the skin looked good. I now wonder if it was something more serious going on inside of her. But if it was she never every showed any signs of it bothering her. Please let me know what you find out. I have attached some pictures of the spot. Lexi passed away the end of june to what i believe was a allergic reaction.

My Piccolo has cutaneous vasculitis, but has been in remission for about for at least three years. She was diagnosed at a Vet Dermatologist and this doc told me that this was probably a reaction to vaccines. According to this vet, the most common cause is from the rabies vaccine. Piccolo also had a secondary infection, which is suppose to be common with this type of vasculitis. Your pictures look much different than Piccolo's spots, but I am sending anyway, so you can compare. (I do not have these pictures on this computer, so sending the old thread with the pictures.) I do recommend going to a Vet Dermatologist. Good luck and hope things get figured out quickly. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ind-gross.html

| Waiting for Dermatologist Appt Thank you all for your responses. I am really surprised that my vet would not have discussed cutaneous vasculitis with me! It definately sounds like it is a possibility that needs to be looked into. My vet is not in until Thursday so I went ahead and call the Dermatologist. They said the soonest they can see her is 9-12-11. No way! I am waiting to hear back from them. In the meantime I still have an appointment with my vet for Thursday. If it is cutaneous vasculitis, is a biopsy necessary? Will the biopsy just rule out other things or will it diagnose the cutaneous vasculitis ? I am so worried.
