i got 4 cans of eukanuba chicken and rice wet food, mashed. it should last him a little longer than a week if he likes it...if not i'll prob return some of it..but either way it'll prob make it easier for him while he's still recovering from the teeth loss. i do have to give him his antibiotic (clindamycin hydrochloride)2ce a day. it doesnt say whether to give it while he has a full stomach or what not so im guessing it doesnt matter. im foreseeing some massive problems putting a dropper in his mouth cuz he does not like ppl touchin his mouth. Anyone know if im supposed to just stick it by his cheek and squirt it in there?? thats what im assuming
glad to have my baby home

NO NOT ON EMPTY STOMACH - always antibiotics, nsaids, steroids mid meal so i give 1/2 food then meds then 1/2 food - my yorkie is on clinda for staph infection - ask if they have tablets 25mg - i just ordered them from drs foster and smith but it takes 4-7 days which is fine as she is on them for 24 days so i will do liquid until it gets here but for the liquid pull the hair on side of mouth and slide the syringe behind the top canine and squirt slowly and hold head elevated so it goes down - it is bitter medication so keeping in the fridge will help it taste better vet and my vet tech friend said

this antibiotic can cause diarrhea so i double up on probiotics while dd is on it and she did not have diarrhea last time and so far this time so just a heads up

did they give you tramadol for pain after removing teeth? Both my york who lost 5 teeth and my malt were on pain meds after extractions - just curious as you did not mention that ?

Some extractions are not as painful. Depends on what teeth they pulled. As for the diarrhea, I have never had it with my pups who had dentals and were put on clindamycin. Not saying it will not happen, but has not happened to me. Hopefully, it will not for you!

how many extractions did they do as dd only had 5 and they gave me tramadol for 3 days and demi had 27 and she was on buphenoral and clavamox but dd was not on any antibiotics as she did not have as bad of gum disease as demi and we see a board certified dentist so he does not believe in using antibiotics alot - does he seem to be in any pain ?

1st of all..there was no way i could get the dropper near his mouth so i put it in his food and he ate it fine..is that okay?? and they took out a bunch of his front bottom teeth and one or 2 in the back bottom if i understand correctly. he said the gums had reseeded and the roots were showing, and the teeth were loose. the ones they kept were in there really well, but he did say some had roots showing i think, but b/c they were in there so tight and didnt seem loose at all he kept them. his breath is a BILLION times better now. He looks kinda hillbilly to me as far as bottom teeth go..which you can only notice if hes lickin his lips. lol And he doesnt seem to be in any pain to me. he lays around a lot, but he played with his squeaky toys and ran around a bit. He just acts like hes not used to gumming things. .like you can tell he can feel a difference when he eats and grabs things with his mouth. im sure he'll prob get used to that..
on a food note, he ate his wet food with no problems but when i added the medicine to the second parts of his food, he burped LOUDLY both times after eating a serving with the medicine in it...normal right??

[QUOTE=dwerten;3039722]as long as he is eating and not burping you are good

did you mean as long as he's not throwing up? his burping isnt a big deal b/c nothin came up?...lol

i think ill keep all the wet food so he has about a week to recover, and ill slowly mix in his dry food with it and see how it goes that way i can try to switch him back to dry. The wet food was WAY quicker to feed him with no problems, which was fantastic, but its EXPENSIVE and gross smelling and messy. lol

well if it is healthier for him i would deal with the negative - i would stick to the wet honestly if it does not make him throw up as just like in humans throwing up alot messes up the esophagus like bulemic girls as the acids from stomach so if the wet is working the food cost will be much less than the vet visits in the long run

so its okay that i put the drops on his food instead of shooting it into his mouth? i mean, he ate it so i thought it would be okay, but i couldnt find anything that said you could put it in their food.

im just happy he's gonna start feeling better. i know how to control the vomit problem with dry food..it just takes longer for each feeding..so we'll see. i dont have 50 a month to spend on wet food plus it makes their teeth worse..which he obviously doesnt need. The vet said maybe now he will chew his food better/slower now that he doesnt have that pain in his mouth...so time will tell i guess.

i did email the shelter and asked if she notified anyone about the breeder that gave timmy, and many other dogs she was using to breed, up b/c i think that person should be investigated b/c timmy is only 3 and has gum disease, which should NOT be the case..and i know the one pom the shelter got from the same breeder had missing teeth b/c of problems also..this woman should NOT be breeding small dogs, or even own them if she isnt going to care for them. and i remember the shelter lady saying that even with her rescuing 14 of the dogs, the woman still had probably 30 left!!! makes me sick..waiting on response from the shelter on this

wet food is not necessarily bad for gum disease what happens is it can get below the gum line more so than hard BUT you have to brush the teeth at least daily or twice a day after feeding preferrably but i do it at night before bed. Gum disease in these dogs is really common even at a young age as i brushed my girls for a year with petzlife gel religiously and she lost 27 teeth at 4 years old so it can happen - I did not want to put her under and that was a big mistake - what happens is toy breeds have a small bone to tooth ratio so if not brushing the tartar and bacteria set in and it does not take much to lose teeth for them unlike humans and big dogs that have a larger bone to tooth ratio. Now i have a yorkie who had her teeth cleaned at 5 and only lost 5 teeth so it really depends on the dog. My malt i should have had her started at 2 years old with teeth cleaning but the tartar did not look that bad and i had no idea about all this stuff back then. She had bad breath and i kept thinking it was digestive issue as her tartar was not that bad well now i know bad breath is NOT good and is gum disease not digestive issues

I grew up with shih tzus they never had teeth cleaned never lost teeth chewed on dog bone bisquits so i had no clue but maltese and yorkies have horrible teeth
