vomiting yorkie..please help Hi everyone, i just joined this message board today so hello! I just got a yorkie boy, Timmy,(3 yrs old) from the shelter about 2 weeks ago. He is generally fun loving and likes to play and everything, but i have a problem with him vomiting every day recently. It started out small, but it is always a white sticky bubbly throw up. Its always when he is eating. It used to never have food in it but now it does a bit. I had him on Eukanuba for small dogs (what i have my 6 lb pom on) and i just switched him to Purina One for sensitive systems 2 days ago. But he is still vomiting during eating, maybe more now. Its not EVERY time he eats, but most times nowadays. Vet said to try new food, which im doing, but still worried. What happens is, i give him a lil food, then i take it away to see how it goes and he starts licking his mouth and his mouth sounds really sticky with saliva, and then he throws up the white sack-like vomit. Once he finishes eating the last of his food, hes fine and happy to go play with toys and Spice, my pomeranian. What could this be??? |
sounds like inflammatory bowl disease to me - what are ingredients of food? Did you switch over slowly? Make sure no chicken or white potato in diet and google inflammatory foods and stay clear of them and no treats with dogs with digestive issues as they need to be on a basic diet. If you switched too fast that can be an issue. White foam means all bile is vomitted out of stomach and stomach is empty - if food is not going down and vomitting back up undigested then ibd in small intestines and may be why he was turned in :( this runs in this breed. My dog has it. A limited ingredient diet may be best another thing is since you just got him he could be stressed and stress colitis is also a possibility so try this before doing food switch - soak the kibble so it is soft and easier to digest and see how he does - it may take a month of doing this to calm him down, get him use to new environment and settle his intestines. If soaking food does not work then a diet change may be in order - kibble is much harder to digest than wet |
The shelter got him b/c a puppy mill breeder called and said she couldnt handle all her dogs. supposedly he was used as a stud there. The vet didnt seem to worried b/c his bowel movements are normal. He loves to eat. I did switch him over fast. I don't know what he was on before i got him. The eukanuba has chicken and stuff in it, but the new food i got has salmon and rice and oatmeal in it for sensitive systems supposedly. I did switch him straight over with no mixture, so maybe i should try slowly, but i didnt think it was a big deal bc he's only been on eukanuba for a week b4 the change. (i was worried he was allergic to it) Also i tried the mashing of food and he still threw it up in the middle of eating his meal.:( weirdest thing i've ever seen. He seems so happy otherwise, playing and running around, so i dont know how he could be stressed...?? I'll look up the IBD thing and ask the vet when i go next week. |
No advise, just want to congratulate you on your new furkid. Hope everything turns out well. |
You might want to read about megaesophagus. I don't know that the symptoms are exactly as you describe, but I do know that sometimes it takes a while to diagnose this. I suppose if he is able to digest some of his food and he is not losing weight, this is offbase....but might be interesting for people to read about. I don't see this condition mentioned much on YT and it is actually fairly common. Canine Megaesophagus, Aspiration Pneumonia & Myasthenia Gravis |
thanx, i read about megaesophagus..i really really hope its not that, but some symptoms are there...he LOVES to eat thou, so i hope that means he doesn't have that. it sounds scary |
BTW, he has gone a couple days before with no vomiting that we know of, so i dont know if that rules out anything or not. He was/is a very scared dog when we got him, i guess i just assumed that after 2 weeks he would be comfortable enough to not throw up. plus its only while he eats. He has been through a lot these 2 wks, with getting his vaccinations and neutered and being dewormed. I have to take him to vet next week to make sure he doesn't have any signs of worms, so i'm definitely going to ask again if this vomit thing hasn't slowed down at all. still any advice? |
He is still adjusting to life with you. I will bet he will be fine in no time! You are doing the right things! |

Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Dogs with stress colitis usually diarrhea first then the entire intestinal tract gets inflamed if severe enough and then they vomit but they usually have diarrhea with ibd in small intestines vomitting and large intestines diarrhea so since no diarrhea i would bet it is small intestinal inflammatory bowel disease did you soak the food? Soaking helps it glide down the tract better. Salmon is a rich protein he may not be able to handle that as my ibd dog was on salmon and white potato when he started vomitting and i attributed it to white potato but could be combo. Do not switch yet try soaking it and see how he does if soaking it does not work then i would mix in some natural balance venison and sweet potato as that is a limited ingredient food for dogs with allergies and sensitive digestive upset. I just think if stress colitis you would have diarhea going on :( and if food change usually diarrhea happens as well since no diarrhea i am really leaning to ibd in small intestines like my dog has if they get inflamed up comes the food whole with ibd feeding 3-4 meals a day helps to in easing digestion and do not let him run around after eating so try to keep him calm if you can to not upset his tummy |

Thanks for all the advice..i have to admit im getting so frustrated at my situation. he NEVER does it at all unless he is physically eating his meal. He can play and do whatever and not have any problems. I switched to the salmon diet about 3 days ago and it seems even worse that the eukanuba b/c he is now throwing up 3 times per meal and it has a lot more food in it than it used to. I dont kno whether to keep on it and see if its just adjusting, or to give up and go back to eukanuba to see if it gets a little better. So worried |
Is it possible your dog is just eating to fast? Dog Pause Bowl Prevents Dog Bloat | Dog Health Do a google search on dogs eating to fast...a number of articles come up.. Just a thought.. |

are you feeding wet or kibble? if the next food change does not work then ask vet about tylan powder as it is used for ibd is a very low dose antibiotic with an anti-inflammatory agent to help with inflammation in intestines but it is very bitter tasting so would prefer if you can get ok with just food if he is throwing up during meal i think the salmon may be too rich for him and it is a fatty fish too :( |
