Yorkie Yakker | Anal glands Hi friends! Munchie is not feeling well, he start acting different since yesterday about 5 o'clock, I took him to the vet this morning. And she told me that his "anal gland" are swollen, I felt terrible when I saw how red and a big lump he has there, she prescribe for him CLINDACURE (CLINDAMYCIN HYDROCHLORIDE LIQUID) TWICE A DAY. Well my question will be what can I do to prevent this to happen again? thanks, Gina and munchie: Last edited by GINAROD; 05-14-2009 at 02:49 PM. Reason: correct spelling |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | As long as everything is okay structurally (rare that it's not), then I would look at what you're feeding bc sometimes if there is an ingredient that's irritating to a particular dog's digestive system, they end up w/ clogged glands. What is his poo consistency on his current food - is it nice and hard - or is it mushy? If mushy, then the food may be the culprit.

| It sounds like his anal glands became impacted and infected. He needs to get them expressed regularly by your vet to prevent that from happening again. Here is a great article on anal glands: Anal Sacs |

Yorkie Yakker | anal glands His poo is nice and hard, but he is a picky eater, and he has allergies, so I have bean force to change his food many times. He doesn't like nothing with gravy, or blend, he prefers pallets, so he is taking now AvoDerm Natural Lamb Meal & Brown Rice But in the past he has try, Life's Abundance Beneful Healthy Radiance(with real salmon & wholesome rice) for a shiny coat and healthy skin. Eukanuba something circle I can't remember the name and others too. The Vet has never talk to me about cleaning this glands, I have no idea it had to be done, not even today, she didn't say anything like bring him once a week a month nothing like that, only to bring him nest Thursday after he finish the medicine, unless he doesn't get better to take him right away. I had other dogs in the past, Yorkie is the first time, and this never happen to my other dogs, this is new for me, but it looks extremely painful, and I know it is, because Munchie fallows me every were, and now he is just laying down on his bed, he has gone out-side 3 times only, and he loves to go to the back yard. I feel so terrible for him! Thanks to all for your helpMunchie and Gina |

| Anal gland problems can be related to allergies. If his allergies are doing well on the current food and his stool is firm, they will have to be empltied regularly if they won't empty on their own. You can learn how to do it online or your vet can show you or just pay to have to vet do it.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Sometimes, groomers do this as a natural part of their routine. I learned this the hard way though (about four years ago) and that they don't always do it properly. A new groomer who did this for/to Ozzie began a lengthy medical nightmare that lasted for more than a year. |

| My doxie has the same issue. He has had to be expressed twice in a little over a months time. The second time he got a medication for an infection and will be checked again in a month. If it continues to happen frequently like that, they can be removed but that could lead to loss of bowel control! I would rather take him in once a month to have them expressed but I will stay clear of the room. His "personal" smell is REALLY pungent!

| Anal Glands My Freddie seems to have constant problems with this. Was on antibiotics almost all last summer. Then it was a weekly thing. Took him to the vet once a week so they could express his glands. He never showed any signs of pain though. Our new vet just said if the glands became ruptured, they could be removed (ouch). But since there's a question regarding any future anesthesia, this is not an option for him. I read online how to do this myself ( groomer doesn't do it) and I'm wondering if I would or could make things worse if done incorrectly? Our dachshund was the same way last year, and since this infection is not supposed contagious, it has to be their food. Take care

| Edie's anal glands became infected and abcessed one time when she was about a year old (about 8 years ago). After veterinary care, she healed nicely, and it never happened again. I don't have her anal glands expressed on a regular basis. If everything is working correctly, it is not necessary. I understand though, that some dogs need this done on a consistent basis. My message: you may NOT have to have the glands expressed just because this happened once. |

| IF he needs to have his anal glands squeezed once in awhile, you can learn to do it yourself. I do Jemma's once every 2-4 months. I always get something but not tons of it. I least this way, I know they are not full. Usually if she starts the "skoots" along the floor I squeeze. lol. It doesn't take much for her to skoot. |
