Default Anal Glands

My Freddie seems to have constant problems with this. Was on antibiotics almost all last summer. Then it was a weekly thing. Took him to the vet once a week so they could express his glands. He never showed any signs of pain though. Our new vet just said if the glands became ruptured, they could be removed (ouch). But since there's a question regarding any future anesthesia, this is not an option for him.

I read online how to do this myself ( groomer doesn't do it) and I'm wondering if I would or could make things worse if done incorrectly? Our dachshund was the same way last year, and since this infection is not supposed contagious, it has to be their food.

Take care
