Edie's anal glands became infected and abcessed one time when she was about a year old (about 8 years ago). After veterinary care, she healed nicely, and it never happened again. I don't have her anal glands expressed on a regular basis. If everything is working correctly, it is not necessary. I understand though, that some dogs need this done on a consistent basis.

My message: you may NOT have to have the glands expressed just because this happened once.
