I read online how to do this myself ( groomer doesn't do it) and I'm wondering if I would or could make things worse if done incorrectly? Our dachshund was the same way last year, and since this infection is not supposed contagious, it has to be their food.

I wish you the best for Freddie, I don't know how it will be for Munchie in the future, since this is the first time this happen, but it is hard to see him suffer, so I will do my best to keep him healthy.
