| Poison or Liver Shunt? What are the signs? Howdy All, Came home after my daughter's gymnastic's class and my little Pip (5 months old) was NOT himself. Shaky, jerky body movements and he kept tipping over. Couldn't walk, back legs were stiff and wouldn't move. Seemed out of it, drunk like. Rushed him to the ER and they said there's a chance he could have eaten something toxic or that it might be a liver shunt. They fed him charcoal just in case. Looked better when they finally let me see him an hour later but was still a little jerky in movements and acted like he didn't know me. Or could have been that he hated being there and just wanted to leave. They sent me home and by that time he was his normal self. Next morning I went over the the rooms he had access to and all I could find is an empty bottle of Elmer's kid glue with the top off it and a tennis ball that he had chewed half the rubber from the middle. My gut tells me it's the glue or the tennis ball but the ER was thinking it was Liver Shunt. Can anyone tell me what the symptoms of poisoning are and what Liver Shunt symptoms are? Thanks, Deirdre & Pip P.S. I plan on having blood work done next month before he gets fixed. Also plan on laying down the law that unless any of the family is 100% keeping an eye on him he's to be fenced off in the kitchen where he can't get into anything!!! Also plan on keeping all the tennis balls way up high when not playing with him. |

| Well, those symtpoms could've been either. Symptoms of shunt are seizures, circling, head pressing, drooling, lethargy, depression, urination issues/UTIs/stones, GI problems, staring, inappetance, etc. If the vet is thinking that it is possible LS, the blood work should not wait until next month.

| I had the same problem last night. If the vet is thinking LS, let them do a Liver Bile Acid test immediately. |

| Could be either. Please don't wait - make an appt. for a Bile Acid Test - this is different than just normal blood work. Also, a 5 month old puppy should NEVER have freedom when left alone. This pup should be contained in a 'puppy proofed' area when unattended. This is for training purposes and for the pups safety. |

| I sincerely do hope your little one will be okay, I definitely would have the bile acid test for liver shunt done, for sure. But my main concern is the tennis ball...the insides, I believe are made of latex and rubber, both of which are not really digestible...let alone possibly toxic, or it may be an allergic reaction. Did the vet take an x-ray of his abdomen to make sure there was no obstruction? Please keep us updated on Pip's well being.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | It could be either, so I'd def. test for LS. However, the limb stiffness is very often seen in poisonous situations - in fact it can be a telltale sign when there is nothing else from which to make a deductive diagnosis. I am really glad your vet gave the charcoal.

| At five months, he's old enough for a bile acids test. I wouldn't wait another month. I'm sure the ER vet did bloodwork. Did you get a copy? Can you post the results? |

| Does anybody remember the case several months ago on here where a pup was bitten by a black widow spider, and had the stiff legs and other symptoms similar to what is described here? Could it be something like that? I agree that blood work and bile acid testing should be done very soon.

| I found the case I was thinking of, it was Koda, and here is the link http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ng-w-koda.html jump to post #99 for the diagnosis (spider bite). Dierdre, did you and the vet check thoroughly for a bite?

| I don't want to scare you in anyway, but I lost Ichabob to a tennis ball, that had been broken by the labs and Ichabob chew and shallow 3 parts of it, he was throwing up and while at the vets he threw up a piece, they did xrays and found 2 more pieces in his stomach, he died going under anesthesia for surgey. needless to say we have no more tennis balls around here. Ichabob was 7yrs old and 15lbs. also one of the labs became sick and because she was a military dog I took her back to base vet with the tennis ball they sent the ball out for test it can back toxic felt cover. she has since somewhat recover, I email the makers of the ball and was inform, their balls are not pet toys.

| No update, I hope every thing is alright...I really worry about the fact that this little one ingested parts of a tennis ball...this can not be good.

| Pip Update Sorry it's been a while, my teenager has mono so I've been at home with her and have no internet at home. Pip's doing great! We're going in for a BA test next week. I have a feeling it was the tennis ball though, it was the "chuck it" kind (pink / purple) found in pet stores. The middle has a weird rubber material that he had chew a bit out of plus half of the felt on the outside. I've since thrown the other one away. I'll ask the vet about the possibilities of the rubber being stuck in his intestines. Luckily we don't have any black widows in our neck of the woods though I did check him from head to toe and didn't see any cuts / bites / marks / etc. He is about to lose his first tooth though! Thanks for the concern and warm wishes, Pip & Deirdre |

| Glad to hear that he's doing ok and you are still doing Vet follow up. Thanks for the update. The fellow Yorkie owners here truly do worry about others furbabies when they are ill, and we all learn thru sharing the experience. Many more people read than post, so Pip's case will educate many owners.

| Pip's BAC Argghhhh! (that's me swearing) Got Pip's blood work back, he had a 2.3 pre meal and a 42.3 post meal. Going to go buy some Hills Diet LD and schedule an ultrasound with a specialist. : ( |
