| 19 Week Old Puppy Won't Eat after Vet Visit?! My boyfriend got me Lilly for an early birthday gift last week. She was shy and scared the first few days, but by Friday evening, she was happy, chasing us, playing with the kitties, playing with her toys, ect. At that point, she was having a hard time chewing dry food, so we called the vet and they said to try yogurt or canned food. We gave her a little canned food, and she loved it. Saturday she went to her vet appointment, and checked out great. Got a shot, and they put some drops in her nose. Was kind of tired that night, but was ok. By Sunday evening she was vomiting, had diarrhea, was coughing and weezing, and refused food. She'd drink water, that is it. We took her back to the vet yesterday, concerned, and they gave her something for the vomiting and diahrrea and some take-home antibiotics for an upper respitory thing. Vet said do anything at this point to get her to eat, she hasn't eaten since Saturday. She's just very sad and just wants to sleep. I'm trying to be paitent and let the meds work, and see if she'll come around, but I'm going crazy seeing her like this!! I've been trying to put the food in her mouth, but she spits it back out. The only thing I have been able to do is put yogurt on her nose and she licks it off. What do y'all think I should do? We are heartbroken for her...... |

| Awe, so sorry ur going thru this, but, congrats on such a cute baby! Get her some jar of baby food. Stage 1. My vet recommended it once cuz maddie was not eating and she just loved it. Did the vet test her for worms? Also get some nutri cal and give it to her every couple of hours or so. |

I would go and buy some Nutri-Cal or Nutri-Stat and place it on your fingertip and rub it inside her mouth 3 times a day with the amount as directed on the tube. This is a HIGH CALORIE DIETARY SUPPLEMENT for dogs/puppies that are not eating or eating less than they should. Give this to her and I think you can also try boiled white chicken (not the dark meat) I THINK... If she is not drinking and still vomiting or has diarrhea you may need to give her Pedialyte by Sryinge just to make sure she is getting her lost fluids back and she does not get dehydrated. The vet shouldn't have given her a shot if she was ill as there immune system is already weak and giving them a shot will only make it harder for them to fight their own infection as well as render the vaccine useless. (I believe you said she got nose drops that is why I figured she was ill). Also, keep the heat on in your home and maybe purchase her a heating pad for under her covers (how much does she weigh) a tiny baby can easily get pneumonia and this also may help her to feel more comfortable while fighting her infection. If you get worried please get her back into the vet, these lil babies can get very sick, very fast. There are others who are more educated in this area, but, sometimes you also need to ask for bloodwork as there may be another problem Yorkies are prone to such as Liver Shunt or pancreatitis. Hope that helps you some, if you have other questions feel free to ask!! Last edited by annamalyssa; 12-17-2008 at 08:48 AM.

| Hi. Been through this a few ties, mostly with kittens. But yu can try Nutrical..glop in a tube full of calories and some vitamins, she might eat it or you can pt it on her nose and she'll lck it. Try chicken, raw or cooked, ay tableffod she likes, babyfood, the meat types cottage cheese, broth for hydration. Youc an also scald milk;, whole milk jus scalded will Not cause diarrhea and Will give calcium. Try vit. C. If she throws up then a little Pepto can help. Then you can also try microwaving her wet food, or adding a touch and I mean Just of salt or garlic to cooked or table food so she thinks she's getting something off your plate. The nutrical will also bring her appetite back up. When she gets better add an immune boster, something natural, ad acidophillus, way more than what's in yogurt, to counteract antibiotics..which kill good and bad things..and put her back on track. She could have had an adverse reaction to either the shot or the kennel cough drops..if that's what they were up her nose. I hope that helps some and give her a squeeze for me. Also keep her warm if you can..food digests better warm then cold. Best of luck with your fuzzybab. |

| The coughing and wheezing could very well be kennel cough and it was likely caused by the bordatella vaccine (drops in her nose). This is what the vaccine is supposed to prevent but sometimes it causes it. If it is kennel cough, they can get pneumonia secondary to it, so I'd watch her close. Lethargy is common after vaccines. She should be back to normal within about two days after. Was the lepto vaccine given? This causes it in particular and can be very dangerous to small dogs. With the vomiting and diarrhea, make sure that she isn't dehydrating. If she is very small and still isn't eating, an IV at the vet may need to be considered.

| Thanks for your help everyone!! It's sooo appreciated! I'm going to go to the store and get some Nutri-cal or stat (can I get that at Target or Wal-mart, or is it from a pet place?) and will get some baby food too. she was 3.1 lbs. at her vet check on Saturday. I just took a hot shower and put her bed in the bathroom, and have the heat blasting, and that stopped her shivering, but she's very Lethargic, and won't eat....the not eating is what is stressing me out most.... Y'all are so nice! I appreciate the help so much! Her daddy and I have been worried sick! |

| She's never been fed any people food but the yogurt. She threw up on her little bed, so while it's being washed, I got out a heating pad, and she's currently napping on it. I'll just go to PetSmart and get her the Nutri products. Whatever it takes to get my baby better! |

Please keep us updated, vomiting is definately not good in a baby that tiny. She can get really sick, really fast and sometimes even the vet doesn't mention that sadly I just don't want to see anything happen to her.. so just to be safe keep a log of : how many times and what times she is vomiting when she is eating and drinking when she is going potty & when you are giving her meds or offering food and if or if she doesn't eat. If she continues to vomit you may want to take her back in just because she is so small and not eating, she may need iv fluids.

| I found the Nutri-Cal, and she hasn't really been thrilled with the goo... I put some one her nose and she licked it off, but wouldn't take it off my finger, so I opened her mouth and put it behind her teeth. Her gums are pink... She's pottying outside every time we take her out, but now when she has to poo, it's all watery-brown. She hasn't gotten sick anymore today, but she's not really drinking water anymore either. She still hasn't eaten.... She just kind of sits all hunched over, when she does sit up, then she just sleeps... |

I would just have her seen especially if she isn't drinking that is not a great sign. Ellie May I believe she said 3 lbs is her weight... WHEN YOU GO TO THE VET ASK FOR THE FOLLOWING TEST TO BE DONE:: they are not very expensive PARVO Campylobacter Coccidia and Giardia (fecal exam) Just to be safe Last edited by annamalyssa; 12-17-2008 at 01:07 PM.
