Default Puppy sold is now sick

Hello everyone - my name is Erika and we live in Indiana. I have a male and female Yorkie and we have been breeding for quite a few years so I have a little experience. Anyways, this is the second litter for our 2 dogs, and the last litter was born May 6, 2008. We had 2 little girls and a boy, and we sold the girls on Monday. When we sold the dogs they had their shots and wormed, and the puppies were happy-go-lucky and absolutely healthy as can be. No problems, the vet had checked them out. The couple who bought one of our little girls called me the next day and said that the puppy wasn't eating. Okay, that's not abnormal when they go to a new home, but I was concerned about the puppy getting low blood sugar, so I told them exactly what I had been feeding the dogs (which was Science Diet puppy small bites and some Pedigree canned food every night as well). They never called me back, so I assumed that she was doing okay. I get a call today, Friday (they bought the puppy on 7/25 and it is 8/1. They said they had just taken the puppy to the vet this afternoon, but it had been vomiting ALL WEEK LONG. The husband was understandably upset, but acted like this was my fault. This is the first time I have ever had to deal with anything like this, I have never had a sick puppy EVER. So I called the vet myself to find out what was going on because of course I am worried not only for that puppy but for my other dogs as well. He tells me the puppy's temp was 99, which was below normal, and it was like a limp rag doll, not moving. He has no clue what is wrong, but is giving her IV fluids, warming her up and dosing antibiotics. Okay, I know a lot about Yorkies, but not so much about sick Yorkies, my dogs have always been extremely healthy and NEVER throw up or get sick. I know the couple is going to want me to pay for the vet bills and get their money back, but this is not my fault and I need some advice. I don't breed for a living, this is something I just love to do, because I love my dogs and I adore puppies and I love to see people getting a new dog because they love it. But right now I am unemployed and we are barely surviving because our daughter has medical problems. So this time the money is also helping us out. I don't know what to do here, I feel terrible for the couple and the puppy, but I think they should have taken the puppy to the vet much much sooner, I just think they may have waited too long and she may be past the point of no return now. Can anybody help me here with some advice, it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I would wait and find out exactly what is wrong with thew puppy. If it is something that was caused by the people that purchased the puppy it will depend on any guarantee you may have given them. I hope the puppy is OK.

I hope your puppy is okay. I think you would be responsible for a refund or helping with a certain amount of the vet bills if what the pup has is congenital.
Did the vet run any bloodwork on the pup? Did they run a fecal exam? Sometimes coccidia does not show up but is there. This can make a pup go down very quickly.
Is the pup lethargic from not eating or is it becoming lethargic after she eats?
Did the vet send her home with prescription food? If so, which one?

Ditto. It definitely depends on what kind of health guarantee you give and what exactly the puppy has.

We got Franklin from a byb and he got Parvo and she didn't end up having to pay for any of it. :

Hopefully you're protected by your contract! Good luck!

This is a good reason to have a written contract that sets out your guaranty.

If the dog was nearby, I'd go down there and see for myself and try to get as much information as possible. Do you think this could have started with low blood sugar? Did you tell them to try Nutri-Cal in the beginning?

I know this must be very hard.... hoping for a good outcome for you and that poor little puppy.

I know, this is so hard for me - and because I am not a full-time breeder, there was no contract - I just handed them the paperwork and told them everything I could, which is what I do with every puppy I sell. There was no health guarantee, of course if it was something congenital then I would give them a refund, but the vet told me that he did not think it was anything like that, not parvo or any other disease. In all honesty I think what happened was they didn't get her to the vet soon enough. I mean, if my dog was sick, I would have it to the vet next day, and they waited over 4 days before doing anything, with a dog vomiting all that time. Anyone should know that's not a good sign, and I told them when they called that if she didn't get better to call me back and get her to a vet quickly. I think what happened was because she wasn't eating because of the new surroundings (this puppy was extremely close to me, she was the only one who slept with me and cuddled all the time), that she started vomiting and then her blood sugar dropped low and without food or vet care she just went downhill. This is so heartbreaking, and I want to help so badly, but I don't think this was my fault. The puppy was fine when it left here, and all the other dogs are fine, there's no sign of any problems, and the other people who bought a female called and their puppy was slow to eat at first, but once they got the same food they said she started eating. When I talked to the vet he told me that the couple couldn't really say what kind of food we had her on, but I told them over the phone that day EXACTLY what I had been feeding them, and told her to go to the pet store to get a small bag and see if that helped. So I am a little concerned now that I sold the puppy to people who didn't listen to what I said and now the puppy may die because of it. I just needed someone to talk to, I am going crazy here at home because I feel so helpless. I love these babies, they are just as precious as my own two and I am now rambling aren't I? Sorry, I am just pretty upset. Thank you all for your responses and I will keep you updated.

Sorry, forgot a few responses:

No, as far as I know the vet has not run any exams, at least he didn't tell me he had and neither did they - and no, I didn't tell them to use any supplement because they didn't call me back so I assumed wrongly that all was going well. I wish now that I had called them because I definitely would have told them to get that baby to the vet that day. And the puppy wasn't eating, I think that's why this is happening to begin with. I just wish so badly that I had called them back

It could be the puppy reacting to the shots. Not all puppies do well after them. I hope they find the problem and a cure.

I am very sorry to read this, I hope your girl gets well soon. I would stay in close contact with the buyers and vet to make sure they are doing everything possible to help her. If not I would offer a full refund and take the puppy back . good luck i hope everything turns out ok for you & her.

I am most definitely going to make sure they do everything to help her, and if not I would just take the puppy back, because I am worried that what happened this week was neglect. Not necessarily on purpose, I think they just didn't know what to do with a new puppy, but then they should have called me or brought her back or something. I just am so ill right now over this whole thing. Unfortunately they live over an hour away so I can't go see the puppy right now, and I would if I thought it would help at all.

I think I would ask to take her to your own vet to see what's going on. Wish I could help more.

You should go see the puppy. If you were very close, it might be helpful for the puppy and then you would know more about what happened. also, I'd consider taking the puppy back. You could sell it again to someone who would take care of it. This is all very sad. Poor little girl.

Love

Thank you all, I am seriously considering driving there to see the puppy, I just don't know if they will be open tomorrow - this is killing me, I am just sick to my stomach over this, and we live with my mom who has bred YT's with my male too, she's had 6 litters with over 6 dogs per litter and she is just heartbroken too because we were both so close to the puppies. We still have the male, and he is such a sweetheart, and I am now considering keeping him just because I am terrified of someone not taking care of him! It's just that I KNOW that they will be okay with me, and that's the hardest part of breeding is letting them go, not knowing if the people will take care of them like I do. Thanks to all of you for the suggestions and support, I sure do appreciate it from others who love YT's as much as I do!

She could've been having low blood sugar problems, dehydration. My vet said if they're temp gets low, they can have all kinds of side effects. Same with dehydration and low blood sugar. Almost a which comes first the chicken or the egg deal. When they're sick they need to keep warm, they body keeps getting run down. 3 keys to saving a puppy-warmth, hydration (water or lactacted ringer) and sugar (energy).

This sounds like improper care of a puppy. She should've taken her to the vet first off, they should be reprimanded for that. Nevertheless as breeders, it's best sometimes just to not fight, help with the bills and go on. Be sure they're educated. Or offer to buy the dog back and take care of him right.
